they look great for city riding

Nice. How do you think they would ride on wet streets?

I have some 1" slicks on my "commuter mtb". With 80lbs in the tires, the ride great, and roll fast. I cant say much about wet riding, but i would use caution on any bike when riding in the rain.

I just purchased the fatboys for my mountian for a century i did a few weeks ago. These tires are simply amazing, i have nothing to compare them to but i love them. I filled them up to between 90-95psi. I never realized the change in tire would make such a difference in how fast i can ride. I would say i go around 5 mph faster with the slicks on my mountain bike when riding on the streets. Simply a great tire and not to expensive. i think i paid $15 each at my lbs.

If you have a decent-quality mountain bike and can adjust your saddle and handlebars to let you approximate a racer's crouch position, 95PSI slick tyres should get you within a few percent of road bike performance. For some people, one mountain bike with two sets of wheels (slick and knobby tyred) may be a decent, cost- and space-effective alternative to two separate bikes.

I've been running 1.25" Specialized Fat Boys on my Bianchi MTB this year and they are great for minimizing weight, rolling resistance and noise compared with a 1.5+" semi-slick. I haven't had any flats yet but I haven't logged enough miles on them to make any claims of their superiority in this regard. A friend of mine uses 1.25 Avocet FasGrips and they seem to be very similar.

Wet weather traction is alway lower but these would grip as well as, or better than, a semi-slick of the same size. Manufacturers put small grooves in tires mainly because most people won't buy a bald tire.

You're right, I read a few years ago that a racing bike slick tyre will not start aquaplaning until it reaches a speed of 200-250mph - not terribly likely. The grooves are thus largely for psychological purpoes.

Btw, I fitted my MTB with a set of 1.25" Fatboys yesterday. I'm quite light so i put 60psi in them and they are brilliant, fast but really smooth and great at absorbing bumps on cr*ppy country roads :D .

Those look like they are perfect for use on the trainer I need to buy!

Has anyone bought a slick with kevlar beads or are they limited to wire beads due to the increased pressure?

I need slix on my bike 2. Does it matter wat kind of bike u have 2 fit any tire?

I guess I have a similar question. I have an XC hardtail wiith Mavic 223 disc rims. I currently run 2.1 " tires, but do a lot of road riding and was thinking about switching to narrower tires. What size tires can these rims accomodate? Thanks. :beer:

What do you have against the proper use of the english language?:crash: :crash: :crash: As far as your question (if I can decypher your AOLese) The main thing to keep in mind is the width of your rim. ie: don't put 1' wide slicks on you downhill bike.

Logic, get a set of 'Fatboy's on it - you won't regret it ;) .

My rear 1.25" slick is installed on a Mavic 221, which looks to be no wider than a 223. You could play it safe by using 1.5" which would also provide extra cushioning.

These are the road tires I use. The foldable version is 195 grams and they last a very long time. My first set lasted for almost a year and a half (off and on) until I hit a gravel road at 30mph. :rolleyes:
