Most highly conditioned road cyclists do not need the 30 tooth chainring because they are capable of pushing the 39-21 (50 inch gear) or 39-23 (46 inch gear) up even steep mountains. I cannot. I have a triple now for extra insurance in hills, even though I very seldom ride where it is hilly.

Its useful for long rides, where you get tired, and still have to face a hill, or if all your riding is on steep hills.
In the professional peleton there are hard-riders who make a point of using a high gear to psych out the opposition, and there are natural born climbers, but the sprint specialists really suffer in the mountains. I wont be surprised to see them "wimp out" and use triples when the going gets tough.
Triples can also save your knees from damage and keep them working well for longer.

If you like a triple, use it.
I read a story about the advent of the derailleur. A famous cycling champion publicly denounced its use as unnecessary for conditioned athletes. The inventor of the device challenged this racer to a race to prove the value of his invention. The course was over mountainous terrain and the challenger was outside the racer's competitive class.
He admitted the usefulness of derailleurs on bicycles after being soundly defeated.
I'm with Pete. Some say you don't need it, but biking is a very personal thing, what works for one person may not work for the next guy. Personally, I like triples, it gives you more gears to mess with.

Thanks for all the responses! I am so happy it's not a rumor.
I personally feel more 'secure' knowing that if I need my granny gear, it's there. I DEFINITELY use it around the very hilly areas with no shame. I have to laugh when I am spinning (ok, sometimes extremely slowly) up a very large hill and I hear comments that their bike needs more gears. That's exactly why I opted for the Ultegra triple. I would recommend a triple to anyone who rides for pure enjoyment and doesn't want to blow out a knee.
Hmmm, I wonder if Campy will come out with their line of triples?

Guys, guys, enough of this "pros don't use trilples" talk
FYI, Lance and Tyler will be using triple cranks in the mountain stages of this year's TdF.
Prepare to see double chainring posers flock to the shops and come out with triple chainrings.

Some pros, like Lance, prefer to spin smaller gears when climbing. Some are more comfortable pushing bigger gears more slowly. I assume the spinners want to increase their gear selections for the big climbs and are willing to carry the extra grams. I also assume they will swap back to doubles for all but the extreme climbing stages.
The spinning has something to do with getting as watts as possible out of your pedal stroke. Also, I think you are less likely to bonk with triples.

Triples are a good idea for most anyone, I'll always have at least one bike with a triple. Winners of the Tour have used them at certain points in the race. If Laurant Fignon (etc.) can use one, I can too. Triples are great for: early season, dirt roads, pulling or carrying a load, working on or maintaining your spin, long tough climbs, saving your knees for old age, times when you want both a climbing gear and a close ratio.
