View Full Version : Clipless foot pain?

This summer my right foots started hurting in between the arch and the heel. I'm a marathon runner so I thought running was causing the pain, laid off but it's not getting better. Funny thing is, it doesn't hurt when I run, only when I'm walking. I'm wondering if my clipless pedals are causing the problem? Anyone else have this? I use Shmano pedals and shoes. Pain started not long after I went to these and it's worse after a long ride. Does adjusting them make a difference? Advice appreciated.

How stiff is the shoe's sole? How much is it able to flex?

Theya re pretty stiff, not much flex at all. I think they are Shimano M40s.

i had this when the cleat was all the way up by my toes. try moving the cleat on the shoe back towards you heel a little, it might help.

I have really flat feet and I have only found a couple of shoes that don't hurt my feet. The ones that are best are the more flexible rubber sole shimano, the low end ones.I also have a pair of Nike's that work pretty well.

I had this problem this year and solved it by new insoles in the shoes, moving the cleats all the way back and finally a shoe stretcher from Target for $7 to make my normal width shoe fit my wide foot and eliminate toes going numb after about 2 hours of riding. the shoes are Shimano M180s and also 661 Nuevos, both very stiff soled but also no forgiving on the arches without help from the insoles. I cannot stress enough how much supporting my arches improved the problem as well as improved my power and endurance( no pain equals no holding back) the insoles are a diabetic insole that my Pharmycist(sp) gave me to try but Ive heard great things about superfeet insoles

I also have flat feet, so flat they get suction on wet floors. I have the cleats centered. I'll try moving them back. I tend to stand a lot, maybe the supports are what I need. I run in really good shoes, Brooks Trance, but went the cheap route on my MB shoes, maybe a bad plan?

thats why I listed the shoes I use. the M180s are good shoes, the 661s are inexpensive and until I got the arch supports I had the problem in both pair.
I also work on my feet all day and Redwing shoes made a huge difference as well to not only my feet but ankles, knees and back

It's all in the shoes and arches. I have very flat feet (Although not flat enough to stay out of the service as they let me know ;) ) To avoid pain, I make sure that my shoes contain high arches. I have used inserts to achieve this with great results.

Geez, I think there is a pattern here. I ALSO have flat feet!! LOL!

Anyway, I bought a pair of Specialized Rockhopper shoes (low end) and added an insole I got at a CVS Pharmacy and they work like a charm. No pain ever.

You've convinced me. going to get some shoe inserts and put a bunch of miles on the bike and see what happens. Thanks for the advice!
