Hey Chicago peeps, I'm looking for one of those older, larger school yard type bike racks.
You know, the old metal ones that you really don't see anymore since Da Mayre replaced 'em.
If you know where I can score one let me know!

I know I've seen a few recently but I can't place them.
They're just sitting out in the cold, rusting away!
I'd love one & give it a home in my basement, next to the gimp!

I second asking the city where they put them and if you can get one for free. No harm, no foul right? Or you could just "find" one laying around somewhere...
my roommate and i built a totally ghetto-fabulous bike rack some time ago out of wood. it is definitely functional enough for our purposes.

I've been meaning to make one out of 3/4 inch pipe, just like my workstand.
Would be easy enough.

I bet I can use one of those crappy futon frames that people are always throwing out!

That would probably work great.

Used pallets left on loading docks..........
I once saw a book on how to make all the furniture for a house using pallets.

We've got one down at our housing co-op, but people use it all the time.

it's for making a truck bed rack out of pvc pipe to hold three bikes ~$20. i am sure you could mod that to your needs.

Woah!
I never thought about that!
And it'd be super light.
PVC Glue, eh??

I would think it would hold fine without glue but the glue would only make it stronger. If you don't glue certain parts it would be modular and allow you to extend in the future.

you can NEVER have too much bike parking.
Our basement probably has 35-40 bikes/frames in it, and I'm sure there will be more in the future after we finsih renovating and have **** organized.

Our MIG would do it just as well. The problem is finding enough metal. Maybe.... Oh ***** I should totally just go over to Working Bikes and take their dead frame pile off their hands and make it into racks.
Right after I do all the other shti I need to finish. Dammit.

40 bike frames? Holy ****...how on Earth have you amassed so many bikes?
In Uptown Bikes, on Broadway and Wilson, they have a rack that was made out of old rims. Very cool looking, and works well too. You could go in there and check it out and ask about it, the staff is friendly, I'm sure that if whoever built it is around he'd be happy to give you tips. And then Working Bikes would be a good source for some old rims. Much heavier than PVC, especially since the rims will probably be steel, but has the cool factor of using old bike parts.

There is one at the corner of rush and huron, in front of the omni hotel. Not sure how it is secured.

they're not all mine. I live in a housing co-op, nobody owns a car. One guy owns one bike, everyone else has at LEAST three. There's 8 of us. I've lost count of how many bikes/frames I have.

oh, and there's a little tiny bike rack in the Menard's parking lot in Cicero. It's TOTALLY unconnected. I was kinda pissed 'cuz it really doesn't do any good to lock a bike to a rack you can just pick up and walk off with in a parking lot full of large trucks.
