How much difference do these fancy ksyeriums and cosmics make to ride speed/comfort? I'm going to build a bike and was wondering how it works...

save your $ and get some Mavic Heliums off ebay. Krysium frenzy is overrated.

In general, the low-spoke-count wheels are lighter and have less wind resistance at higher speeds. Service and maintenance generally require returning to the manufacturer.

An alternative: get a good set of Mavic Open Pros with a quality hub of your choice, and use the money you save to buy a trueing stand, spoke tensionometer, dishing tool, and a copy of The Bicycle Wheel, by Jobst Brandt. Just my $0.02.

FWIW... I've been racing/training for years on "standard" tubulars (currently train on DuraAce/Helium wheels w/32 spoke count). Anyway, when Excel put the 2001 Ksyrium Tubulars on closeout a few months ago I decided to buy them for my race wheels, retire my worn out training wheels and make my race wheels my training wheels.

Long story short, I could immediately tell a significant difference in how the Ksyriums "spin up" versus my DuraAce/Helium wheels (which aren't junk either). I honestly didn't expect much/any difference between the Ksyriums and my traditional wheels, but I'm now a believer theres a difference.
