Its my guess. Seems to make sense, all of the sudden you have alot of people searching for track specific parts and willing to buy them where ever they can find them first. I think he knows that people will pay for it and he is taking a chance. It seems he has raised prices for other items as well.

hey all,
possibly - but I doubt this starts at John.
Miche is good option for the price (BB as well), but not as versitile in the ring (135bcd) department as the Sugino (144bcd).
also - anyone heard if Sugino is getting rid of the silver polished rings in favor of the newer black anodized ones? if you read closely, the ring/cranks combo has jumped in price b/c a ZEN ring is now the best option (limited stock on 75 rings it would appear).

I thought the anodized black rings/cranks were being produced in addition to the silver, not instead of.

Its looking like it now comes with the Zen ring now. So that would be some of the added cost.

My local EAI dealer made it sound like the black was being produced in addition to the silver. And the black is going to be a US market thing apparently an exclusive for EAI.

Odd though that he has two sizes of the Sug silvers (47, 49) only. John has always done right by me, so I find this to be one possibility.

Agreed - if anything, this probably starts at EAI. I've heard thoughts from others that because they pretty much have a monopoly on Japanese and keirin parts in the US for wholesale/distributors, they can price at will.
And because of the demand, they will.
John is as honest and fair as they come. A nearby track-oriented shop has to increase prices almost exactly in lockstep with John. The things that go up the most and the most suddenly, well, they nearly all seem to come through Euro-Asia. Go figure it out. Look at PD-64 cleats, 7400 pedals, 7600 hubs, etc. Prices doubled almost overnight on these items because EAI moved the prices up.
