Mountain Biking - Quick Question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a quick question...my dad want to buy himself a bike from an old friend but he lives in manitoba and we live in alberta so we can see the bike other than pictures...soo what size bike would be good for my dad who is 5'2...his friend is selling a bike that is 17" would this be to big? Thanks.
Yeah, it would most likely be to big. I am 5' 10" and I ride a 17" - 18".

I agree with LowCel. It'll probably be too big. I'm a foot taller than your dad and am using an 18" frame right now. You will always want to buy a bike in person, especially if it is your first "real" bike.

What size do you think would be good for him then?
I'm 6'3 on a 16.5 what would technically be the size for me? Like 21 lol?
He would have to test fit some bikes, that is the only way to really know.
OK. I just cleaned this thread and buried a bunch of posts with a whole lot of AOLese and just a few real words thrown in for the measure. People, please read the Basic Guidelines (http://www.bikeforums.net/faq.php?faq=basic_guidelines#faq_disruption) (again, if you need to), specifically the part about disruption. Posts with excessive AOLese will be removed.
Any questions, please PM me. Thanks.

In response to this now easy to read question, they do this to protect the landings from newbies trashing the top of the tranny. It makes the landing smoother to some degree and stops them from getting trashed when some cases the landing. In area's or REALLY dry dirt it also helps keep the dust down.
