Foo - Converting an Image to Vector Format

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm going to get some custom jerseys made and I have a JPG image of the logo I want to use, but it needs to be in vector format. Is there an easy way to convert it, or do I have to draw it myself? I'm a terrible artist.
Some companies will do the artwork for me, but I'm all for saving a little money if I can.
Vector Formats have to be drawn in vector if I remember right, at least I don't know of any bit-maped image software that could convert. Remember that vector is basically a mathimatical formula while a bitmap is pixels...

Couple of apps available that will do what you want. They open up a pixel-based image and use contour-following algorithms to trace the edges and output a vector file.
Adobe Streamline - will output in Illustrator, vector-PICT, EPS, DXF and EMF formats
Corel Trace, ScanVec Tracer, and ArtLine 2.0 also work, but don't have as many options. :)

Check out something like "WinTopo (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/heatons/softsoft/wintopo/) " or just Google "Raster to Vector". Not sure how well it'll work, but it's worth a shot!

matters how complex the image is, either way you'll probably need to do some clean up in illustrator or freehand
maybe you can scan the photo, paste into illustrator/freehand background and trace it
haven't used photoshop for awhile, but I think you can put the image on a layer, and then trace it as a vector on another layer--this is probably the easiest, but again you need access to the equipment/apps
good luck

Where can you get custom jerseys made? And how much?

There's a lot of stuff out there.
http://www.customsublimation.com
http://www.hincapiesports.com/custom.php
http://www.voler.com/ordering.aspx?PID=1
http://www.louisgarneau.com/usa/ctm_catalog.asp?catalogue=C6
etc., but I'm really liking this site:

Lower minimums and lower prices. Most of them are $70+ with a minimum order of 15-25. I forget where it was, but I saw a place once where you could do one jersey only for $100.

Oh, and if it makes any difference, here is an idea of the logo. I'll probably use a different font, though.

GIMP 2.2 (the latest version) has limited support for vector graphics, I believe SVG, but I don't know if it can convert an existing jpg into svg. The manual does refer to another program called Inkscape you might want to check out.

Thanks for the link. It didn't really work all that well, but I'll play around with it for a little while longer.

Raster to Vector seldom works very well unless your objects are extremely simple and clean/clear. Its usually best to learn how to use a Vector application and redraw the item in that format.
