Not sure where to put this post, so whatever...

Has anyone ever heard or used this light? The Knog Frog light?

http://www.knogusa.com/

Read a small article about it, wanted to know if its worth it.

Anyone?

I bet this would be best in the commuter forum. As to whether or not the light is worth it that kinda depends on what you want it for. For the purpose of making a cute little police bike (red and blue flashing lights), I'm sure they would be great. For night time visibility, that just not going to cut it. The super bright 1 W LEDs like the CatEye EL500 are good for getting others to see you, but not great for seeing the road. The Frog lights really wouldn't be able to approach that level of candlepower.

i use a thing that the guys at my lbs call a 'magic turtle'.
it's basically a photon (http://www.photonlight.com/) with an elastic band, and a couple of little legs to attach it to.

costs $8.00, doesn't do much to let you see where you''re going, but is bright as hell to people coming at you.

I use a white knog frog light strapped onto my Bell Arc helmet. I've been using it for a few minutes every night for over an academic semester. Sometimes the switch will get a little flakey, but it has never completely refused to operate despite rain, snow, etc. Can't comment on how easy it is to replace the batteries since I haven't had to yet. It is nice to be able to point the light directly at the oncoming motorist you want to see you the most.

Those are pretty lame, they're not going to do you a lot of good.

You should just cough up 30 bucks and get a princeton tec 3 led light. It has a lifetime warranty and is super duper bright.

I pity the fool who calls my kit lame! :)

Have you used a frog and found that it isn't bright enough for you to feel visible to oncoming traffic?

My previous flashers have all either shattered when they came unclipped from clothing and hit the asphalt, had their mounting hardware snap, gotten stolen, gotten lost, or gotten forgotten. The helmet-mountable, no moving parts, single-PCB-encased-in-silicone design of the frog have eliminated all these modes of failure in my usage so far.

I admit I'm tempted to splurge on a more expensive helmet mounted light, but I don't think I could do so without making sacrifices on durability, weight, and likelihood of theft.

+ 1 for the Frogs, they're great little lights. Much more durable than the turtles since it's not a hair elastic holding them on (which will deteriorate and snap). I also prefer the look of the Frogs to the turtle lights - the Knogs are just translucent white silicone and look pretty sharp on anything, whereas as w/ the turtle lights where you look to have an action figure held onto your bike w/ your little sister's hair elastic.

Pluuus, around Toronto MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-Op) is completely undercutting the local market w/ turtles. amongst other questionable business tactics for a "people/Earth-friendly co-op." The Frogs are a great option to use instead (look better, last larger, ****-off MEC pricing tactics). Look into MEC's history w/ Park Tools (Park cut MEC off from selling their stuff) to see another example.

-1 for the Frogs. Just not enough light to see decently. I'd go with the higher powered Cateye. What good is a night light if the light sucks?

You're missing the point of the Frogs. They're not to light up the road in front of you - they're to light up you. If you need to illuminate the road in front of you, sure, go with a larger light. If you just want motorists to be aware of you on the road and have a light that's easy to get on/off your bike (and not be heavy ... and not be ugly) then the Knog light is a great option.

somewhat off topic- the knog clipless shoes look like just the ticket for someone commuting to a semi-dressy job.

wow, the "blondie" shoe is pretty cool.

old thread bump

I just got a pair of these and neither seem to be working. I opened the first one and it didn't light up so I looked at the instructions and figured I had to open it and put the batteries in a different way. Did this, nothing happened so I opened the second one. It lit up right of the bat so I opened that one to see how they had the batteries which was the same way I had them in the other. I put the second one back together and it no longer works.

Anyone know what could be wrong? I have the batteries in with the top one poitive side up and bottom one positive side down. Thanks.

I don't have mine in front of me, but unless there is a conductor of some sort that goes between the batteries, the batteries almost certainly are placed so that the positive side of one battery is against the negative side of the other. For pancake batteries, this means they should be stacked and facing the same way. Always use batteries that are matched, i.e. replace both batteries with new ones at the same time.

Cheers,
Drew

Well that cleard up the problem on the second light, the one that worked in the beginning, but not the first one. Maybe I will just have to return it.

Yeah you have to distinguish here between lights that are for you to be seen and lights that help you see.

Knogs are fine to help you be seen, but do dick all at helping you see. They're also a sign of hipster infection per BSNYC. =p

That said, I use planet bike super blinky for rear (holy hell is that spasm inducing) and a beamer 5 in the front. Helps me see and be seen.

the light it provides plenty of blinky goodness to keep me visible.

I used two white ones up front in blinkie mode and a Planet Bike Superflash red in the back so people will see me. My cycling clothing that I wear in cold weather(when it gets dark sooner) has reflective piping and logos and that helps, too.

I've seen a bike with several Frogs pointing in all directions. Very visible.

The Frogs will not help YOU see in the dark, maybe the Bullfrog will but serious night time riders have some really bright lights on the bike and their helmets. I pity the fool that looks directly at them.

I have a Frog in the front and a Bullfrog in the rear. Got both for $20-something at Interbike. Not the best or brightest front light in the world but the rear light is more than sufficient.

I would argue they don't do much at all to help you be seen unless there's a) no other traffic around and b) it's a new moon. On a city street with any other light sources around, it's completely lost. You'll get hit using one of those.

I call Frogs only good for making cops leave you alone.

and damn good at it. best cheap light around. but get the superflash instead so you don't get squished.

knog lights have a great design, but they are not bright...at all. waste of money. get something worthwhile like the superflash.

Your kit is lame. There, it's out in the open now and we can discuss.

Then again, whats to discuss. It's a tiny, ineffective light.

Get a SuperFlash or a Blackburn Mars. Or drop the coin and get a Dinotte.

pretty cheaply made. Mine crapped out in about two weeks. The battery's fine but it won't turn off So now I have to open it up and take the battery out when not in use. Very overpriced.

Yeah I guess that's all true.

I do love my Superflash blinky extreme whatever it's called. My friends call it "uggghhh" as they foam from the mouth and spasm due to it's seizuer inducing blink pattern.

That said, Planet Bike has a great feature on their website where they let you pick a light and show you what it looks like on the road. Give me an Alias HID! Only $399!
