I'm contemplating a winter tire purchase. I will be riding on singeltrack. Most likely snow for a portion of the season.

Is the Hakka 300 better for these conditions (worth the extra $20 per tire). Or is the Extreme 296 "good enough".

What is the effective difference between the tires besides 4 studs?

The 300 is a racier, XC-oriented tire, noticibly lighter. Most people who ride in the winter aren't all that concerned about weight, but studded tires ARE pretty heavy. Something to think about. Performance-wise, I can't see the difference being too dramatic. I use the 296 on the back wheel and a 300 on the front.
