I'm coming home tonight in so-so rainy weather with a nice tailwind. So I'm going around 33mph down ft.hamilton parkway by the cemetary in brooklyn, just as I come around near 45th street, I see a red light, decided to go for it, when this guy in a parked car decides to pull out, I didn't even see him turn on his head lights till he was halfway in the intersection and I'm about 30 ft away.
I grabbed both my brakes, locked up the rear, and started sliding, fortunately he stopped in time and by the time I recovered from the skid, I was half a block away going around 18mph. I don't ever want to do that again, freaking scary... I think I skidded a good 80-90 ft though. :)

not trying to be a wise-ass but you know lockin em up isn't the best thing to actually stop you...

you shold feather the brakes, get them right to the point of skidding let up a little then do it again.... and get your ass wayback behind the seat so alot of the weight and braking pressure goes backwards giving you rear tire more "grippitude"

you ever see one of those bike racers lunging for the line with the bike pushed as far forward as possible? thats how i look when i gotta stop REAL quick. plus if you do hit, your bike is out there to act as a crumple zone (better that then my head).

like this, but looking up

the rain and wind add a whole nother element to the adventure! i had a 30+ mile an hour tailwind in parts of my ride in today, can't wait for that to hit me in the face on the way home

When someone pulls the old "pass and turn" manuver, I lock em up so I skip sideways and end up parallel to the car that just cut me off. I figure if we make contact it won't be a t-bone, but rather a side slam, so far I've luckily avoided contact alltogether. Its the only time I purposely skid.

I need to start hitting the punching bag again for conditioning my shoulders to body slam.

Did you ride today (Tuesday morning) ? The weather is predicting flooding and 60 mph gusts up here. I'm thinking it will be similar in NYC.

Hey, did I tell you about my light ? :)

I actually did let up right as it locked up, but you gotta understand, at 33mph, there really isn't much time to perform manual ABS on the rear brake. Like I said, I let up immediately after I initiated the slide and by the time I recovered from it, I had bled off 15mph of speed and was about 80-90 feet from when I started sliding; this took less than 2 seconds and that's not a lot of response time when your head is sideways checking out some chick in a tight wet cold blouse...

I rode in today, was gusting up to 40mph this morning, headwinds, cross winds, all the same, everything but tailwind. I was getting tossed around like a pancake in a washing machine.
Going home's gonna be fun though, sustained 35mph gusting to 55mph going my way.

This thread is useless w/o pics!

Skidding 90 ft. is cool. Unless you need to stop in 89 feet or less. Bring an anchor and a short chain and drop it next time you need to stop quick.

when i had my accident with the car, i started sliding about 25 feet before impact. it's a very helpless feeling.

No way man, freaking scary, like Tim says, it's probably the most helpless feeling you can have other than being embedded in the front windshield of a car with your butt sticking out.

Yeah, I know. It's happened to me in a car. Once you lose control, it's hard to get it back and you do all the wrong things like tense up and become rigid. Winter's coming up and the best way to avoid situations like that is to prepare for them by purposely skidding while maintaining control and practicing avoidance maneuvers in a controlled environment, like a snowed over parking lot. Plus it's fun.

It's totally that chick's fault for wearing that.

It may be a little flooded on the way home, you may have to consider your options carefully.

I have no choice but to ride the one in the middle then; it's the only one that's actually a bike.

The giant trike on the left would probably actually work on land as well as water. And you'd have no problems with cars seeing you ;). Although you'd HAVE to VC, the darn thing is as wide as a car.
