I bought one of those cheap travel bags when they were on sale at nashbar, and I never even took it out of the package. Now I'm going to Philly on the bus, gonna be there for a few days, and because the pink nightmare is such a simple fixed beast, I figure I might as well take her along.

Anything I need to know or that I may not have considered about travelling with my bike on the bus in a soft sided bag? I have those plastic things to stick in the dropouts so the fork and stays don't get crushed when they (surely will) toss my honey around. No fancy parts to speak of, figured all I have to do is take off the wheels, pedals, turn the bars sideways and give the bag handler a half sawbuck so he'll put it in last, on top instead of under a 100 pound suitcase full of newspapers.

Do I need to so something special with my wheels? I thought of getting some velcro fasteners from the dollar store to keep them from moving around... but that's about it.

dirty dog would never see one of my bikes, much less in a soft bag...
i spent two months on greyhound and in a week they managed to bend the frame of my pack, which had previously been thrown off of moving trains without a dent...
i don't know what goes on under the bus, but it can't be fun...
if i were you i'd at least take the bars and fork off... make the thing as flat as possible...
also, i'd worry about bending spokes... check all yer spokes for good tension maybe? i'd imagine a loose spoke would bend easier...

Oh, I know the pooch, I rode it from Detroit to Laredo one morning when they closed I-75 south of Columbus and we were the last bus out. I have fond memories of DTW to PHL but my bag doing to Washington via Dulles and giving out soggy xmas presents on the 26th.

Wheels are good, and this bike is nothing special, but it's still my baby. Maybe it would help if I got some big sheets of cardboard to put inside? Then again, I've seen the boxes that come off the bus. It would be smoother and flatter though.

I guess I could take the fork off too; a headset wrench isn't that big. Guess I won't be riding home from the station though.

at least pop the stem... leae the forks on maybe, but take off the stem, then the forks can turn sideways to lay more flush with the frame, and the stem/handlebars don't make some weird bump/point/stabby-thing to either get crushed or get caught on another package...
it'll also keep your handle bars from getting crushed into the top tube...

Screw a soft bag. Go to a bike shop, get a box, pack that sob full of bubble wrap, and sacrifice a chicken to papa legba to make shur that it gets there in semi ridable condition...
