Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Where to find 42t Crankset?

Im ready to buy the final parts for my Kogswell Model G and would like to find a crankset that can be purchased with a 42t ring. I know I can buy the 42t ring seperate, but that would be too expensive. Does anyone know where I can buy a crankset that comes with a 42t ring?

huh? i don't understand how it would be more expensive than buying them together, unless you mean for shipping?

Most track cranksets come with a choice of ring size.

Or find yourself an old Superbe Pro or Campy Strada road crankset on Ebay.......they come with 42 rings..

good point. are you looking for a track-specific crankset, with a 1/8" chainring? (i don't know that a 42t 1/8" chainring even exists).

Harris. They'll swap for you with rocket rings on certain cranksets. Not the BEST prices, but good to support a shop that probably pays the money to keep Sheldon's awesome site up.

I bought a used campagnolo crankset. it came with a 42, and a 52 ring. I did have to spring another $5 for short stack bolts

You have many choices, depending on your budget.

Bulletproof (110mm), Sugino RD (130mm), Stronglight (130mm), Miche (135mm), or Sugino 75 (144mm) (in order of expensiveness) with a Salsa 42t (all BCD sizes) ring will be ~$60 to ~$200, not including shipping. Add some more for chainring bolts. Note that the chainring is 3/32"... the 1/8" limits your options quite a bit.

Last time I tried to get a Salsa ring that wasn't ramped or pinned, they were kinda hard to find in certain sizes. You'd have to check around. Harris Cyclery (http://www.harriscyclery.com) or Spicer (http://www.spicercycles.com) should have what you need.

The reason im looking for 42t is because Im thinking I could set my flip/flop hub with a 16t cog to ride in the city and a 21t freehub to ride on the mountain roads. (not to mention my old knees say no way to a 48t ring) There's not one single LBS in my city that carries fixed gear parts so I have to buy online. From what I've seen online, most of the cranks come standard with either 48t or 46t rings and the 42t ring would have to be purchased seperate. (from what I can tell) AND, most of the 42 rings I've seen are the ramped and pinned designed for triple cranksets.

I took the BB, crank and the attached 42t off a mountain bike, it fits perfectly on my SS road bike.

make sure your frame can accomodate the range of wheelbase due to diff in size of the 16 and 21 rear

yes they do but very rare> The only thing close is a Campy BMX chain ring 1/8" in 43. I have 43,44,45 .

call trackstar in nyc,they may have the gold campy bmx crank 170 mm arms with 43 or 44 chainring. tell them i sent you.

Both Salsa and Sugino make 42 tooth chainrings without ramps or pins in the 3/32 size. These can be ordered from QBP through your LBS. That's why I use 3/32 instead of 1/2 - it is much easier to find chains and chainrings.

Check your fire Thor29 - 1/2 refers to something different than you are thinking:

Chain size is specified by pitch and width. The pitch is the distance between rollers (1/2" on all modern bicycle chain). The width is the internal width where the sprocket teeth fit in. Bicycle chain comes in two basic widths:

-1/8"

-3/32"
