Just random thoughts on what has become one of my favourite groups...
Turn on the bright lights is a great album. 'Untitled' leads you to a stupor and makes you wanna pick up a guitar and get it to wail like the song does... NYC is another album that packs a punch with very nice sounds, guitar effects, paul banks wailing. PDA is probably the rockingest of the album and with NYC forms a nice 1-2 with a marked tempo shift...
The music is more calculated and the delivery is even precise on Antics. In many ways the sound is much more polished in comparison to 'turn on the bright lights'. My favourite songs have to be Evil and NARC... The layering of sound probably catches my ear more than anything plus the guitars and drums mesh beautifully...
Of course the lead singer sounds like Ian curtis but I dont care about lyrics so maybe i am in the minority of people who really like them a lot for their sound..

I dunno, I have been unable to get into Antics yet--everything sounds the same to me

Even though my review seems to indicate i like antics more, I like bright light better. I actually heard Antics first, loved Evil and Narc and then listened to their first album... Maybe you should wait for a wintry day and then listen to it.. Thats how I got in actually :)...

Turn On the Bright Lights has slowly become one of my favourite albums of the past five years. I originally avoided it because of the hype surrounding the band (mainstream hype around an independent band usually means they're not worth checking out...ie, The Arcade Fire, the Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, etc...rubbish bands), but when I found out Greg Drudy (Saetia, Hot Cross, Level-Plane Records) used to play drums for them, I decided to really look into the first full-length.
I'd heard it in my sister's car before, and I thought it sounded like typical hipster kid bull****, but upon listening to it repeatedly, I found it really enjoyable. I won't say it isn't typical hipster kid bull**** (as it sort of is), but I will say it's a fantastic album, musically. Maybe it's more than that, but I haven't looked too deep into the lyrics or meaning behind the songs. There are definitely some songs on the album that are blatant in their relatively shallow subject matter, which may be leading me to the conclusion that the lyrics are just fluff. Either way, the production on the album is perfect -- I think it's probably my favourite album, production-wise. And this is coming from someone who hates slick production.
I wholeheartedly back this thread.

I am slowly getting into Antics. I love, love, love Turn on The Bright Lights. I agree that Antics sounds more "there," more "polished," etc. than TOTBL, but the previous one has this great raw energy and this great diversity in sound and tempo that taps right into my energy. I just loaded TOTBL onto my iPod mini, and it's mixed in with Death Cab for Cutie's Transatlanticism and a couple other albums for my 'biking mix' for this weekend.
YAY for music and bikes!

...the Shins...rubbish bands
wrong.
I use Interpol as studying music, it's just really easy to listen to, and quite addictive. NYC or the untitled track on 'bright lights are probably my favorites.
