Don't need one where I live.

Congratulations.

My carlessness has varied depending on where I live.

Right now, the station wagon hasn't been turned over in 6 months, and the commute is just over 2 miles.

I have never owned a car for as long as I have been in University (six years). Biking everywhere is the way to go and renting a car or having great friends when you need to go far. I have never owned a vehicle before and don't plan on it for a while yet. The only reason I would get a vehicle is if I live in the country too far from work to bike.

Hey Euro, where do you live? Finland?

I feel guilty when I come here since I own two cars and a rust bucket and drive when given the oppurtunity if only occassionally (I like going fast).

But for twelve years. I would love to do that, though this whole going out and finding a woman thing isn't quite working so well on the bike.

Congrats. I aspire to someday say the same.

I'm the same way. I moved out of my parents when I moved to college and never owned a bike. It's not my immediate future plan to get one either.

A car free lifestyle is worth lack of a relationship, at least by my somewhat doubtful standards.

I have come to the opinion more and more that car free lifestyle is about attitude above all. I say this having been car free my entire life. There has consequently never been any desire to drive anywhere, and I manage just fine. What keeps people away from this lifestyle is perhaps the mistaken belief that some huge part of their life will fall apart without a car, or that there might come some circumstance where owning that car proves very profitable.

There are some very amazing bike set ups, for just about every conceivable need, and almost always an alternative form of transportation. The real question comes down to expectation, and basic attachment. Do I do things the hard way, or the easy way? We become attached to speed and efficiency, and since as a species we tend to lack discipline, we easily succumb to utilizing a means that offers little burden to us, when it is available.

This is why I commend all of you who are attempting to become car free or have come to this lifestyle after utilizing vehicles. You show a lot more discipline, have achieved a much greater feat, than someone like I, for whom the seduction of motorized vehicles never presented itself. This lifestyle, dare I say, is relatively easy for me.

And I believe can also be for all, but I would imagine the temptation to use a vehicle once one has been used and when one is present works tendrils into the mind that are far deeper and more sturdy than those of any narcotic.

Hey Satyr, I used to live in Uppsala for a semester on an exchange. It was there, that I actually got into biking as it was the best way to get around the city. Great place to live and wonderful city to bike in.

Why don't you find a woman who likes to ride? I heard there are some.

At least get rid of 2 of your cars. Action is called for, my friend. "Aspire" in one hand and crap in the other. Which one fills up fastest?

it's funny, lately i've been getting more attention from the girls because i ride a bike. granted, some attention is shock and disbelief, but it's mostly positive ;)

this whole going out and finding a woman thing isn't quite working so well on the bike.

If only I had been single when girls were hooting at me and yelling to me that I had a nice a** as I rode home.

And in other news, my girlfriend is talking about selling her car. (/newscaster voice)

I hate to sound like a broken record but that won't be the case if you commuted on a fixed gear. Chicks simply dig guys on fixed gears... :D

You must be looking at the wrong woman. There are women who couldn't care less if you have a car or not (me being one of them). Cars make me nervous to ride in... plus, I get all twitchy sitting in a car because half the time, I could have avoided the traffic jams!

Keep looking, bro. They're out there.

This is too funny. Over on the team estrogen board there are a bunch of bike fiend women who complain about not being able to find a guy who wants to put miles on a bike. They're out there guys, don't give up.

Maybe we need a singles forum? Koffee?

I have been "car lite" for almost a month now. I got rid of my car (which died) the other week. This is a good thing since I have not driven it but twice in the past three months. We are car-lite because my wife still needs the car and there are kid activities that require us to have a car (scouts, roller hockey, etc).

My SO is quitting this month so the kids will move to a closer school and take the bus. I see only one trip to the gas station per month in our future. Ah.....the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Maybe we need a singles forum? Koffee?

They have a website called cyclingsingles.com. And yes, I am on that board, but inactive. The guy who put together the board PM'ed me and said he was putting together a board for people looking for riding partners, so I went ahead and registered. Lo and behold, it's a singles setup. Bleah. But great for those really looking for love on a bike.
