I read the article when it came out in the middle of the TdF. If you have only read the net version, you should ask around to dig up a copy of the actual magazine (at the public library perhaps?). Because only if you see the hard copy will you get to see this great picture of Lance: he's just wearing jeans and, while his arms are a deep brown, his torso is as white as bone china. He's smiling a charming smile--nice change from his usual scowl.

The article's good. I wish it had gotten information from a wider range of sources. I am pretty tired of the Chris Carmichael line.

What mag was this in? TdF??? What does that stand for?

TdF == Tour de France. Also "Those damn Frenchmen", "Terribly drunken Fratboys", and "Taking Debauchery Farther."

Thanks for posting. I read that article in the NY magazine, too, and rummaged around their web-site for an electronic version that I could post here, but couldn't find one at the time. What really blew me away was the writer's perspective (a cycling enthusiast, just like us), and that he was able to present that perspective in a magazine whose target audience is more the SUV crowd.

And, while you are looking at the article, don't forget to browse through the magazine--the New Yorker's cartoons are the some of the best around.

Oh, and I just have to mention that the New Yorker is famous for its long, in-depth articles. Although it seems that the articles are tending to grow a bit shorter, which is too bad. In my opinion, the magazine offers some of the finest writing available in a U.S. magazine. I like it enough to pay a fortune to have it delivered to me in Germany.

I wouldn't characterize the magazine as writing for the SUV crowd. First of all, they are snobbily New York focussed, which means that many readers don't own cars, let alone SUVs. Second, their cartoons have been lampooning SUVs for years (even back when the fad was just starting). And I have read more than one article critical of SUVs. Furthermore, if the SUV phenomenon were just a phenomenon of the well-to-do, then there would be far fewer of them. The other main part of the New Yorker's audience--a certain kind of educated intellectual type--is typically way too liberal to drive SUVs in the first place. That is the weird thing about the magazine: they are liberal and well-to-do at the same time. George Bush often takes a beating in its pages (see latest issue 15 September).

So, you might accuse the New Yorker of being a bit snobby--but it's totally self-ironic snobbery. For the irony and the critical writing on so many subjects, I am willing to overlook, or giggle at, the snobbery.

It is a great article indeed, something that reminds me that I never trained right either. The article also has the share of some words starting with F(?). hehe :D

Well I finally got my hands on a copy of the magazine with this article. So here's the picture Jamie referred to in his(her?) post. My scanner is CRAP so I took it with my digital cam. It didn't turn out great but at least you can say you saw it.... :D David

Has anyone read his book? You know the one about his comeback after cancer? What is it called? I'm planning to buy it, but don't know the title.

Any idea on the price?

It's called It's Not About the Bike. I read it recently and enjoyed it very much. So did my wife.
