Liquid....no residue on clothes if it doesn't completely dissolve.

liquid, preferably buy one get one free at the grocery store. Why? I can never remember what brand is best, so if I get a crappy one I can put in more and still come out ahead. Maybe I need a wife :).

If lower budget is better, I find Powder is best :p

Liquid is less messy and rinses easier (or appears to.. ). For recommendations on which one, I usually follow the advices based on ratings by www.consumerreports.org, usually pretty good for a lot of things around the house and never listen to any commercials
I use Arm and Hammer without perfume and dye for sensitive skins, works well and pretty good $ value.

Liquid by far.

Powder will sometimes leave a residue, not to mention after a while the soap dispenser on the washer will be a pain with undissolved soap that needs to be cleaned out.

I like tide clean-rinse liquid and arm & hammer powder.

But to answer your question, liquid all the way.

Liquid.

If there's an area on my clothes that's particularly soiled or stained (like engine oil, grass stains, etc.), I can pour the liquid right on it before putting the clothes in the washer, and invariably the stain is gone when I pull the clothes out of the dryer.

What my wife buys. She at this point only uses liquid. With no perfume or dyes or anything that may leave a scent.
