I want to turn my huffy sledge hammer into an ice fishing bike. It would only ride it on frozen lakes with minimal snow. I need some cheep ideas for turning the tires ice worthy. Where to get chains, spikes, ????.

And are you going to haul a shanty? Rigid or collapsible shanty?

Here is a thread on making your own studded tires: http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-20576 . If you search around you'll probably find more. Sorry if that's not what you are looking for; I might've misunderstood the question.

Makeing studded tires looks to be easy if time consuming.
Basically you have two choices:
1. put very short screws with a sharp head into a knobby tire from the outside. The screws have to be short enough to not penetrate. The heads of the screws provide traction so you want something with sharp edges like a machine screw with a hex head.
2. put slightly longer screws from the inside so that the point protrudes through tire. You must use screws with flat smooth heads and a tire liner to prevent the screw head from puncturing the tube.

I guess the third choice for a little more money is buy a pair of Nashbar studded tires.

We used to wrap "plumbers chain" around our tires when we were kids. Worked OK but I think studded tires would be better. How are you going to carry the power auger? The 5 gal pail? I can't seem to go fishing without at least 6 tip ups, 2 jig poles, two pails, and a grill. Some times I even catch fish!

hey guys thanks for all the great advice. Things are starting to come together. I have also been tinkering with the idea of filling the tire with fix a flat. So that the screws would not puncture the tire. Just thinking out loud.

Probably a good idea, but check that it will perform at those low temperatures (the back of the can, or their website, will say). Time to get some fat 2.5" tyres, a box of bolts, and a power drill.
