You want to put a 9 speed cassette on there as well.

The spacing between the cogs is different between 8 and 9 (that's why a 9 speed cassette fits on an 8 speed freehub).

With a Shimano rear derailleur, there is a tiny amount of side to side float in the jockey pulley, and with very precise tuning, you can just barely make a 8/9 shifter/cassette combo work (little noisey on the outermost gears), but with SRAM, the pulley is fixed, it don't work at all.
