Foo - Any drywall installers here?

I'm having my bathroom redone because of mold. I'm in a rental (base housing, actually) so I'm not doing it myself. The guy putting up the new greenboard has left a gap of about 1/2-3/4" between a couple of the panels and says that's by design but my wife doesn't remember exactly the reason he told her.
Has anyone heard of this technique? They'll be putting plastic fake 2x2 tile sheets up over the drywall.
Thanks.
