For those of you who use PocketMail, is it a pain in the butt to type on that little keyboard? Does it slow you down a lot?

It drove me insane at first as I was very slow, but I got used to it and built up some quite good speed by the end of my recent 2 month tour.

The main problem is that you have to press the soft keys quite hard and right in the middle. Also, the "Done" key is right next to the small space bar on the right (where I normally hit the space bar with my right thumb), so I was constantly pressing it by accident when typing, which then meant I had to navigate to drafts and edit to get back to my message.

A fantastic little device though - I would heartily recommend it. I was a bit sceptical at first, but it has worked on every phone I have every used it on, inclduing some very dodgy looking payphones in the middle of nowhere.

It's too small to type on it easily with both hands like a typewriter, but too big to "thumb-type" like I see people doing with blackberries. You'll get used to it, though. I haven't used mine in a couple of years, but it was indispensible on my cross country tour - very reliable.

I thought it looked pretty small. What would be really nice would be a PocketMail with one of those foldable keyboards that you can use with PDAs. I'm better at writing on a computer than with good old pen and paper. The thing about PDAs is they're kind of expensive, the screens are small, and I don't have a cell phone, so if I wanted to use it to e-mail I'd have to buy a cell phone as well, adding to the costs.

Here's my ultimate dream: something with a screen about the size of PocketMail, a foldable keyboard, but with the added ability to hold maps, all while having great battery life.

Dream on...
