What a great ride today, even with the flu. I can tell I'm gonna pay for it tonight and tomorrow. I was very impressed with the turn out. Thank you everyone for participating. We couldn't have asked for better weather (well maybe a little cooler inland :) ). I'll post my pics and more details on Monday. Take Care...

Hey! How come you guys didn't wait for us? :p OK, not only do we show up late, we pretty much get dropped right off the bat going up Jamboree and then...WE DOUBLE FLATTED!! What a nightmare. :( We were half way up Jamboree and the front goes flat. No problem, get it changed and get back on the bike and then we realize the rear tire was flat too! I knew I should have packed 2 tubes DOH! Fortuantely, Ed from Canyon Velo came by and bailed us out.

So now we're feeling pretty cursed. We discuss going back but decide to press on and pray for no more flats. We get the rest of the way up Jamboree and then head up Santiago...yea, we really suck on hills. We work our way down the gears untill we're in the smallest gears and crawling along at a whopping 6 MPH. But we made it! We start to enjoy the canyon (especially the downhills). We cruise pass the regroup spot optimistically thinking maybe we weren't that far behind. (yea, right) We decide to do the full 68 miles as the long downhills rejuvinate us. We endure Santa Magarita (is that entire street uphill?) and enjoy Antonio which felt like it was all downhill. The steep climb on Crown Valley at Cabot kicked our ass. We ended up walking up the last part. The rest of it wasn't too bad though and we kept our speed up pretty well on a few of the smaller inclines. We decide to get to PCH and take a break at the first market since we hadn't stopped yet except for the walk up the hill at Cabot. We stopped at the 7-11 in South Laguna and replenished on water, gatorade and bananas.

The rest of the ride went pretty well. A few of the bigger climbs in Laguna and Newport Coast put us back to our 6 MPH crawl but we still maintained a pretty good pace (18-19 MPH) on the flats. Obviously we need to do a lot more hills to be able to hang on a group ride. But for a new tandem team and really both being new to 'serious' cycling - we were pleased we hung in and finished. We ended up getting back to the car at 1:50 - 6 hours after we started.

Sorry we couldn't hang with you guys, maybe next time. Thanks for putting this together Pat - I hope you're feeling better.

Hey Johhny Cool & Mac,
I'm glad to hear that you finished the ride (the long one :D ), and had a good time. We heard you had a flat and tried waiting. We all felt bad about moving on without you guys. I was looking foward to sucking your wheels on the downhills :D . You actually only finsihed about 20 minutes later than the rest of us. We hung out eating and chatting in the food court until after 3:00. You guys did great, especially considering your fairly new to cycling. Those hills are nasty on a tandem :p . The whole ride seemed plagued with flats: Dahvaio- 2 flats before we're out of the parking lot, you guys- 2 flats on Jamboree, Extort- 1 flat in the canyon, and Dog Hair- 1 flat in Back Bay. To those who didn't come out, you suck :D j/k, I hope you still managed to get a ride this weekend, I don't think we have very many sunny 85 degree days left this year :) . Can't wait to do it again!

Had a great time even though I had to join you guys so late. It was great meeting everyone even though I was a bit humbled during a few sections. Definitely some strong riders in the group.

Really enjoyed the conversation over lunch. See you guys next time!

OC - Great route, wonderful group, awesome day! Next time you get to carry the SAG bag, we need to slow you down somehow!
Celtic - You are the MAN! Great display of the mental strength that cycling requires. Not only did you decide to stick with the long route, but had a cheerful attitude about the hills you were going to climb!
CJBruin - Humbled? You? We were trying to keep up with you!
Dog Hair - Thanks for refusing to allow anyone to be left behind, that kept this ride fun for all of us!
JohnnyCool - there will be more days like this and we will all have better luck with tubes. That way we can stay together and have fun. Great job on completing the full route!

To all of the others that I met on the ride, thanks for being there!

Yea, I am bad with name too. I am sure I will mess up everyones name as well. The quntana roos were owned my two friends of mine. They haven't been on the forum yet, but they might after this ride. I think they had a good time.

Glad you hooked up w/ us. Those strong riders (including you) have given me something to shoot for.

Thanks -- I would have never made it solo, so thanks for reeling me back in on more than one occasion. dog hair was yo-yoing between the front and back (to help me out) the whole ride -- pretty impressive. At around 50 miles I grabbed his wheel and he was pulling me at 26+ for a few miles.

I got real names and BF usernames mixed-up all day. It'll take some practice to get everyone's names and faces straight.

Were you on the Miyata? It was the only steel framed bike (of about 18-20) that I remember seeing.

I had the bare aluminum frame. It's an old GT Rage.

That was Cyclefreakls aka Tyson (if I remember right), his parters name was Yaun (she explained the whole Juan with a "Y'" thing, made it very easy to remeber :D ) They really rode a strong ride. I can't wait to put up pics tomorrow. I know I saw at least Extort and Cyclefreak with cameras too. Too bad I didn't get a chance to meet more of the riders on the short route. Somehow Pico (or was it Tiko?) and I broke way off the front in the canyon and proceeded to hurt each other the entire way to Cook's Corner.

You said that you did that on the MS150 as well... try not to make a habit out of this, Road Rash is not a complimentary fashion statement to any paint scheme, therefore you'll loose OCP points...

It did lighten up the morning!

Yes, that was me; I was on the Ghisallo. Yuan was on the Siena. I got to spend yesterday at Disneyland with 15,000 of my friends so I'm really whooped now. I'll try to post (zip and post) some pics later tonight. The ride was fun (little bit of Santa Ana headwinds at the end of the canyon were tolerable; I really hate that yuck dry air). Yuan (doesn't post on BF) wanted to extend many gracious thanks to all the roadies (esp. OC RR Dave); she was really worried she would end up being the anchor in the group. OCR did a great job planning the route.

Best luck everybody. Have a safe Thanksgiving.

Hello everyone....I just finished reading all the accounts and looking through the Pics of the ride, excellent, I felt like I was there....

I'm really sorry I couldn't make it...I would have been the token Brit on the ride....but even though I didn't make this one PLEASE let me know when you Guys plan on riding again, although Saturdays are really hard to make sometimes I'll do my best...

Glad you all had fun, you sound like a nice friendly group to ride with...which is what Cycling is all about.... :)
