this is driving me crazy - i have a kind of subtle gritty feeling in my drivetrain now and then and i can kind of feel the vibrations of which in my pedals when i'm riding hard.
i'm pretty sure it's the chain/cog/chainring causing it, caus cause when i spin the wheel by hand, i can feel it slightly.
i cleaned everything, just installed a fresh (and high end) chain, it's not too tight, everything else seems to be running smoothly (BB turns freely and cleanly, same with the rear wheel). the cog and chainring look ok during a quick visual inspection, but could they be somehow worn and causing this?
i'm pretty handy with the wrench and am running out of ideas.

Oh yeah, Justin can back this up—try some du monde tech chain lube. The light iworks wonders. Finding it is the the hard part.

Does it happen when the chain it off? How out od round is the chain ring? Could be tight spots. Also check you pedals.

this sounds a lot like the noise/feeling thats coming from my bike. its a new setup for me as well. new chain, cog, chainwheel.
i'm pretty sure its my pedals (they're old stompers). i'm going to swap them out to troubleshoot it.
wrench at my lbs suggested it may be some grit where the cranks bolt on to the bb. make sure thats tight and clean doesn't hurt.

i did a little process of elimination. i put another rear wheel on the bike - noise still there, so i figured the chainring was the last source of the problem.
sure enough, i removed it and cleaned it and found a some rough spots on the rear side of several teeth where i must have rubbed it against a curb or something i was locking too. three or four teeth had little burrs and nicks on the back. i filed them down and now the problem is solved!

must have been from the Williamsburg Bridge incidents you were lucky enough to capture on film!
