Is rust a phantom issue, or do you have to be extra careful with steel CX bikes given their exposure to the muck?

i think most steel bikes are coated special to not rust... just watch out if you scratch it below the paint...(maybe add some clear coat to protect it). other than that all the bikes I've ever seen at the shop i work at have had little problems unless thay were outside for a long time or were really crappy bikes.
yep that what I have to say
generally not a problem, but they do require a bit of extra maintenance. you can have them coated to protect them. many high end steel frames are already coated. be sure to ask about it if you are going custom.

If you have a new cx bike get a can of Boeshield and spray it inside the frame as directed.
CX bikes don't have a long lifetime like road bikes. They're supposed to be used and used hard. That means they wear out over time. And that gives you the chance to buy yet another great new bike.

How would you like to come over to dinner tonight and explain that one to my wife ;)

If you beat the tar out of them, why would anyone by an expensive frame? Do Ti or carbon-stayed frames take the abuse better?
