Foo - Need a new coffee maker

Hi,
we have an old Braun coffee maker I have never liked.
It's time to replace it, and this time I want something
that makes good coffee.

It has to be coffee, but the type is up for grabs. We have a
drip, but I might try something different, perhaps the intriguing new Krups Moka,
a French Press, or maybe even a percolator.

As you can tell, choosing between hundreds of different machines has my head spinning.

I have a Bosch and like it a lot. It's an espresso/coffee maker....but I mostly use it for coffee. A good friend of mine has a Delonghi which she uses strictly for espresso and loves. On the other hand, my mom got a Starbucks coffee maker as a gift for my dad. He's one of those "I like my coffee and I like it now" people and the maker has a timer so he's happy. LOL

I don't envy you. It's a hard thing choosing just the right coffee maker.

Do you have Tim Hortons near you? They sell coffee makers which are reasonable and they guarantee for an insane amount of time.

I bought this coffee maker when it was time to replace my 10 year old dying Black&Decker under-the-counter earlier this year.

It makes a deeelicious cup of coffee.
Grinds beans fresh right there for each pot
Thermal carafe so coffee stays hot for hours without continuing to "cook" it.

Only downside is that it is slightly (very slight...not much) more work to clean. About every 4 or 5 pots you have to wipe out bean residue from the grinder area because it builds up and doesn't drop through to basket as well as it should.

About $150 in stores, but I found it online for around $115 I think.

ooh, pretty. and omg -- our B&D under counter just died, too. Mistakenly sent SpongeDad out and he replaced it with a Krups, which is just fine if all you want is coffee.

When the toaster also died (I'm telling you, it's time to re-do the kitchen with the death toll mounting the way it is around here -- I've also replaced the microwave and disposal in the last year), I went out to the hardware store and picked out a cute little toaster in the style of "the brave little toaster" in the $20-something marked row. Unfortunately, it was actually $75, and so now we eat $75 toast. Which is, for all you connoisseurs out there, actually worth $75. This really is the best friggin' toast ever. It happens to be Cuisinart. I am totally sold for the rest of my life on Cuisinart products.

Maybe I should start a mass mailing: if $75 toast is this good, should I also not have $150 cups of coffee? Please PM SpongeDad directly if you think I should.

Well, I like Kirke's idea--get the Gevalia machine. It comes free (plus S & H) for trying them out. It's a great machine. I like French Press too, especially for some good strong coffee. However, the cleaning takes too long and you need to allow boiling time for the water. Also, a very coarse grind is necessary. May you find the coffee maker that fits your taste. On another note, I'm a big fan of Turkish style coffee--powder ground and pot boiled. Nescafe made in milk is pretty good too--in my travels around the world, I've learned to appreciate the stuff.

I got a Krups Aroma Control from Bed, Bath & Beyond ... only one month later to see at Costco (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=11030293&whse=&topnav=&cat=&s=1). No warming plate so the coffee "keeps" better.

we have one of those metallic filters that are washable, never had a problem. i love the fine grind ...

I have the Cuisinart without the coffee grinder, makes fantastic coffee, stainless steel looks great and has a nice timer system for 'set it and forget it' operation.

Actually I have a french press, and tried it once. Wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be.

If you are really into coffee the best thing would be
spend as much as you can on a burr grinder, preferably one with
a conical burr and slow revolution. Grind your own coffee to suite
whatever kind of machine you choose.
The Bodum, Hamilton Beach and Krups Mocha (vacumn type brew)
are all excellent, uses 100 year old technology and make near perfect
coffee.
I prefer a French Press but you end up using alot of coffee per cup.
Its also not fast (but good coffee should never be rushed) and as mentioned
a bit of a pain to clean up.

I have a Bunn machine. A small commercial direct water line model.
The probelm is, it's and energy hog.
It keeps water in it's tank at a constant temperature.
Which is great if your making coffee all day.
Not efficient enough for me.

I have the same one and I
LOVE mine. I am by no means a Coffee expert but I always get a good brew from this machine. I love the programing mode and use the noise from the grinder as my alarm clock. Yes, it is a little more labor intensive. I clean the grinder everytime I use it so it takes me maybe 5 minutes to prepare it for the next day but it is worth it......the noise.....the smell.....the taste......

Not if you purchase it as a refurb like I did :( The machine has been great but did not include the metal filter

I just scored a vintage and pretty much mint Pyrex Flamemaster 9 cup stove top percolator for the whopping sum of $20.00 and am presently enjoying one of the best cups of coffee I have had in ages.

I found them selling online for $75.00... and even then still think it would be worth it.

This is the coffee maker I grew up with and one should know that the internals can be a little fragile since they are all glass but this is probably what makes for such a good cuppa as it does not impart any metallic taste.

It took all of 10 minutes to make a pot on the gas range.

Great find! Percolators are the best. We couldn't find the glass ones anymore so we went out and bought a metal perc. The only problem was the clear plastic bubbler on top. It cracked within a week. Gave up and went back to a drip.

I have been looking for an intact Pyrex Perc for quite some time and today I came across two of them...I passed on a mint 4 cup model but think I will go back and buy that one if it is available.
