Hi jeepbike run
I just know your going to regret this:D
I am really lucky as there are numerous hilly routes out of my village in every direction . Its easy to get a differant mixed training ride every day if I wanted.
The touble is I have lost motivation lately. I have also put on 2 stone since completing my first Tri last September. I now weigh 17 stone !....
I am about to embark on a new training program to lose this weight and get fit, hopefully to start enjoying cycling again. I am hoping to use the hills locally to do this but am keen to follow some sort of program to keep me motivated
I would be really interested in hearing how you all use hills in your training to lose weight and get fit. Do you use HRMs ? have any of you constructed a program and monitor your progress.?
Don't worry if you cannot respond Its a big subject area and needs a bit of thought I guess. I was just being lazy and thought someone would say
"Hey heres my programme already done, use this!"

Endurance, Endurance Endurance...... That's my key to losing the "stones". I try to keep within 75% of my mhr for a period of 12 weeks. Once the endurance base is well established I begin working on my strength "hill" and interval training. During strength training my heart rate is at most 85% (at least I try) of my mhr. Intervals can go as high as 92%. As you can guess I do wear a heart rate monitor. I do cross train as I am a Spin instructor at a local gym.
Hey, what do ya know I was able to answer.:D
Motivation is another thing. I find I am at my best (mentally) when I am training for a goal (century, triathlon, 10K run). I also try to include workouts with friends. Even if they are not at my level. Especially if they are a stronger biker, runner etc...
Good luck earleybird and keep us posted.
By the way I love the word "stones" never have heard that before.
Ride on,
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne
thanks for taking the trouble to respond. I know you are so right about setting goals and targets etc especially when you are as lazy as me. You would not believe the excuses I give myself when I don't want to go out in the rain!:D
I have seen `spin instructor' crop up before what actually is it?
Wwe definitely don't have it here as far as I know in UK .
I might try to get one going locally. I know a qualified fitness instructor who is a keen Triathlete and cyclist Is there a course you can do?
regards
Nick

There is a course you complete and you can get information about it from www.spinning.com. I really thought they were world wide. Spinning is an indoor cycling program that is more about the "coaching" aspect of an athlete or everyday person. I have all types in my class and it is my job to understand their goals and help them obtain them. We strongly urge the use of heart rate monitors, but by no means does everyone have them. Each class we tell the participants what to expect, where to keep their heart rates and most importantly why. This does not take the place of outdoor riding, but it enhances the outdoor riders abilities.
I hope you find a program near you. If not, when and if you travel inquire about one of the local gyms to see if they offer a spinning class. Make sure it's a sanctioned spin class authorized by Maddog Athletics. Believe me there is a difference! :)

I've used heart rate monitors off and on, they can be useful. I simply got tired of goofing with them. An alternative method would be to attack your hills in the largest gear you can manage and vow not to change it. If you are really serious about getting strong (i guarantee you will lose weight) buy a track bike and hit the hills. Riding without breaks can be fun. Neither method is suggested if there is a history of heart problems in your family.

I dunno rotifer I think I'm too old to learn new tricks now.
The only time I tried fixed I hated it. When I ride all out on intervals etc I usually like to coast or freewheel down hill after during the recovery period. A fixed doesn't seem to really allow you to do this effectively.
I know our Graham Obree did just what you suggest to prepare for the 1 hour world record which he won but he had a lot of experience with fixed.
Thanks for the advice though

:D I was sortof joking about the fixed. I think hitting the hill in a big gear and forcing yourself to finish would be the way to go.

I'll check this out thanks. Of course all our local gyms and leisure centres have a multitude of exercise bikes with sophisticated HRMs but they are used mainly for just warming up and down and cardiovascular exercise. I don't frequent gyms but those Iv'e been to definitely do not offer spinning programs as such.
This is really interesting I will check out the site and talk to my fitness inst friend.
By the way do you have `Hashing' over there? its brilliant I'll tell you about it next time.

Okay I give... what IS hashing? We have so many similar programs that go by different names.
Does this involve those "stones" you were talking about earlier? If you hash for an hour how many stones can I expect to loose?

Does this involve running or biking from bar to bar? I did a web search and came across a couple of sites like this. If it does you can count me in!

Hey earleybird.
From your description it sounds like you may live in or near to Wiveliscombe. Just a guess - and probably wrong.
If I'm anything like right, though, it could be that you are referring to the Taunton Deane Tri.
In which case, you may be interested to learn that Spinning classes are held at the Castle sports centre, behind SCAT in Taunton.
I've made a couple of huge assumptions here, obviously. Forgive me if I'm wrong! You probably live in a village outside Bath.....

Hey waddayaknow you have won first prize. spot on
:D
It was the Taunton Deane Tri that I completed last year. Have you done this one too?
I will make some enquiries but I think its going to be too far for me to travel at the moment. I live just outside Crewkerne.
Where abouts are you based?
Small world isn't it:beer:

earleybird!
For a few more weeks I live in Wiveliscombe, which, if you did the longer Tri distance, you'll be sure to know since the bike leg came to the edge of the village before turning round.
Sadly though, I'm nothing but a one trick pony - I don't swim or run - but my partner did this years Tri in May. Her first, and she loved it. She even won a prize! (because her race number was pulled out in the raffle, but hey, whatever, a prize is a prize.)
She has also lost the plot since she did it. She had planned on doing the Langport Tri last weekend, but, well, bottled it really because she didn't know the area or anyone else doing it.
Blimey, I've just noticed the time. Would you forgive me, I've got to go & start cooking!
Happy Weekend

Hi joseba jones
Congrats to your partner for her first. this year If we had known your GF could have entered the langport with my Partner kathy and friend Linda.
Kathy has done the Taunton twice and the Langport once so is familiar with the course. We must talk together about doing next years together. langport, Taunton and maybe Barnstaple
We have also lost it big time this year. major building work on Ks house and my business commitments mean that we have done virtually nothing except gym and circuit training.
Kathy is a qualified personal Fitness instructor and nutricionist? and is studying for Tri coaching qualification
She is a black belt judo and good all round athlete ( so I do as I'm told)
Listen theres no such thing as can't right!? Like you I'm a cyclist first so I had to learn to swim last year ( sidestroke) and I still only shuffle walk the run bit but its taking part that makes it all a worthwhile goal and achievement.
You say a few more weeks in Wiv are you both moving away?
