Sadly, I am very inexperienced in Japanese cinema, I've seen zero Ozu, zero Miike, and only Ran by Kurosawa.

D, As far as El Topo goes I have shown it to a couple of my friends who have the same taste in movies and they loved it. I liked the way Jodorowsky used images and little dialogue. I have not seen any of his other films because I have been sinking every cent I have into the car I bought two months ago. However, I have seen Santa Sangre on ebay and Amazon. I have a backlog of movies to obtain after the first of the year.
I wonder if Criterion has considered releasing a Jodorowsky film? I am not sure of what the liscensing loopholes exist. You know, you should make a recommedation to Criterion about Jodorowsky. You would certainly represent him well. I found a contact person at Criterion to submit such a request if you like. Here is the link:

I saw Jarhead and thought it was great because i'm in the military and it felt realistic. There wasn't a lot of flashy Jerry Bruckheimer colors and not a lot of action but they focused a lot of how our soldiers feel and the BS they go through. Makes me appreciate being in the Air Force.

King Kong (no explanation needed)
3 Burials of Melquiades Estrada (directed by Tommy Lee Jones!)

I wasn't sure about Walk The Line, but I think I'm looking forward to it. I think Joaquin Phoenix is a very good actor, but I'm worried about how the movie turned out. If it's relatively honest about Cash's life, I might be satisfied.

Saw the trailer for King Kong – I’m not sure that it will be a great film but I feel confident that it will be very impressive visually. The CGI monkey himself looks very cool and there are lots of other monsters, plus exotic locations, etc. And it looks like a good role for Jack Black.

Jesus, you think Hollywood is cramping up in the creative department?
Alien vs. Predator 2
Blair Witch 3: The Curse
The Brazilian Job (Italian Job)
The Butterfly Effect 2
Clerks 2: The Passion of the Clerks (actually add this one to the must sees)
Die Hard 4.0
Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (no, I didn't just make that up)
Meet the Little Focker
Mission: Impossible 3
Mrs. Doubtfire 2
Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest
Police Academy 8
Resident Evil: Afterlife
Rocky VI
Rush Hour 3
Sin City 2
Untouchables: The Capone Rising
X-Men 3
Having...hard...time...putting digits to keyboard to express my dismay at that list. That's just for 2006! One word comes to mind, and it's something you do with trash:

Having seen Rent, I regret putting it on my “most anticipated” list. Classic case of how not to adapt from stage to screen.
I wasn't sure about Walk The Line, but I think I'm looking forward to it. I think Joaquin Phoenix is a very good actor, but I'm worried about how the movie turned out. If it's relatively honest about Cash's life, I might be satisfied.
I saw it a couple nights ago and it was worth it. Very good film.
I'm sad to say I'm not looking forward to any films about to be released. This is a big deal for me, because I've always been sooo into films. I can't tell if I've gotten older, have less money to spend, have kids/less time... or... if the movies just suck.
Back in the day I went to the theater multiple times a week. And when I went to make my 1996 top 10 list and ended up with a top 24 list because I just couldn't cut anything. Here 10 years later I can't think of 10 films I really want to see from this year. Just for kicks and giggles (and because I love getting flamed), it happens to be on this computer, so here it is...
1. Dead Man (Jim Jarmuch)
2. Breaking the Waves
3. Fargo
4. The People Vs. Larry Flint
5. Everone Says I Love You
6. Big Night
7. Sling Blade
8. Trainspotting
9. Twelth Night
10. City of Lost Children
11. Stealing Beauty
12. Swingers
13. Secrets & Lies
14. Lone Star
15.The English Patient
16. Ridicule (Foreign)
17. Flirting With Disaster-Funniest Film of the Year
18. Shine
19. Romeo & Juilet
20. Hamlet
21. Koyla
22. Looking for Richard
23. Mars Attack
24. Welcome to the Dollhouse
Now, I'm dying to find a film that came out this year that's as good as any listed here... BTW, that was ages ago... if I did the list now, they would be reordered to reflect that which had best stood the test of time...
