In your opinion, do water bottle cages mar the looks of a fixed-gear frame?

Yes is my opinion also (sigh). Unfortunately, any lengthy ride will require some hydration.

i think so but i think function over fashion in this situation comes out victorious. if you commute on your fixed and you have cage mounts then you should probably use them.

Right now, I've got holes in my converted frame where the WB used to mount! I should have filed them off & filled them in before painting, but now I'm stuck with them. I think I'll just fill the holes with the bolts & leave the cage off.

if u got a bag big enough..just put it in there!

that's what i do ... although i saw a guy with this vintage frame with one of those skinny vodka bottles cage on the bike.... looks pretty nice

unless it's a commuter.
Wait, don't commuters carry bags?
F$#it, I'm getting a damn cage tommorow, building a Trackie anyway, so the Raleigh gets a rack and other commuter treats....

who cares about fashion, but if you carry your bottle in your bag you have water wherever you go instead of just on your bike.

sure, that's why I carry a bottle on my bike and/or in my bag.

My waterbottle cage is yellow. It's hot.

I've seen SEXY alternates to bottle cage mounts . . . so where would one find a seat post bottle mount?

Velocity makes the "SPT" or "Seat Post Thing". I think it holds two bottle cages.

i don't have a water bottle cage, i have a hot coffee cage. i do think it mars the simple beauty of my fixed gear, but:
1) so do the cable guides
2) i really like coffee

What's a "fixed gear frame"? Are you sure you don't mean a track frame? If we're going to do the poseur / fashion victim thing here, we should make sure we get our terminology straight.

In my opinion, water bottle cages mar the beauty of ANY bike, but then so do racks, lights, fenders, computers, locks, seatbags.... Basically a bike is at it's most beautiful when it's stripped to it's bear essentials. it is that aesthetic that probably led to my infatuation with fixed bikes in the first place. BUT all of those things are useful, and can enhance the usability of the bike.

It all depends upon your priorities. Much as I loath the thought of bolting extra stuff to my bikes I often compromise in the name of practicality, but in order to avoid ending up with a bike buried in stuff I always ask myself. How much will I use this, and what would I have to do to get by without it. In the case of my fixed bike, there are not water bottle mounts, so that makes the decision easier. If there were I might put one on. But then again I have 3 other bikes 2 of which have water bottle cages. the other has a big ol' shopping basket on the back. When I need to bring hydration on the fix, I just put the bottle in the bag. It's nice to have 1 bike I can keep pure.

Yes, but so do I when I am the one on it.

but many of our fixed gear bikes aren't track at all. conversions and cheap commercial fixed gear bikes (langster, rush hour, pista, cheaper ebay alternatives) don't have track frames.

no waterbottle cages OR bosses is one of the reasons i like my frame.

He must not be doing very well... :p

As far as I'm concerned, bottle cages are just another thing to get stolen off my bike. The less crap I have on my bike the less I have to worry about some jackass taking it.

isn't that the soho mantra
"Function follows form!"
Still applies to bikes though... unless you're cool. ;)

used to have one on the seattube of my bike. nice way to get beer all over your legs/shoes/drivetrain during an alleycat.
