I have a seven year old Giant mountain bike. It is steel with a rigid fork. I use this bike only on the road. I have already worn out two pairs of hubs. My question. Should I put $600 into it? I was planning on installing an XT group. I do all of my own work, including wheel building. One argument, I can get a new bike for that money. I like the frame, and any bike that I buy for that money, would not have as good components as I would put on. I already have a road bike, so I don't need another one.

Sounds like you have answered your own question.Maybe you can find good parts cheaper, but 'just do it'.
