Just finished the Hilly Hundred in Dade City Fl on a Catrike Road, Finished 45 miles, Average speed 12.5. Top Speed 38mph. Trikes are not suppose to climb but thats what I have and I throught I would give it a try. Some if the hills were long and hard and I only managed about 5-6 mph. but the downhills were scary for me anyways, There were about 280 riders, Only about a hand full of recumbents. I made it up every hill and I saw a few rodies that were walking there bikes to the top of some of the longes climbs. I will train another year and do it again next year, I hope that more trikes will be there nevt year.

So, how did the Catrike handle? Did you have any rough roads?

I didn't have any luck finding a coutour map of the area, to find out what qualifies as 'hilly.' I've found that the term is relative to what you're used to. I guess in my book, this (http://hillyhundred.org) is the Real Deal. It's certainly not mountainous, but 15-20% grades will get even a mountain goat's attention.

Good to hear you passed a few wedgie riders. Low speed stability can make a big difference, can't it? Did you get pics of the ride?

Most of the roads were smooth. The more rural the ride the rougher the roads. One nice big hill had quite a few repaires so you had to pay attention to your line. 04 Catrike Road is direct steering, and there is some brake steering. The trick is if the hill is too tall or you think you may exceed your level of speed that your are happy with break early. I make the mistake of starting down the biggest hill and it started to scare me. By that time I was already over 30mph and when I touched the brakes I did not like the feel so I let it go and ran the rest of the hill at full speed. Luckly its a great hill stright and smooth. Still the first time you get up into the mid to high thirtys its scarry. Maybe its because I will be 59 next month and I have a lot of hind sight. Maybe? A fellow rider on a Bacchette said he did 45 down that hill but they ride this area every week. Sunday was my first time riding in this area.
