I Just did an endurance ride/race yesterday and had a lot of wrist and back pain around mile 37. My legs were still in good shape, but I had to drop out because of my wrists. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Have you ridden any distance before?
Has the bike setup been OK for longer rides.
Does the bike fit you in its general size and its fine tuning of the position...
There are several points you should look at.
Is too much weight distributed to the front, ie are you too aero.
Do you grip the bars. Is your wrist set neutral, or do you have a bend at the wrist.
Is your upper body relaxed at the shoulders, and do you ride with flexed elbows ?
Are you bars too wide (ie your arms triangulate out) , too narrow, too deep?.
Does your bike generate and transmit a lot of road buzz.

I have ridden some long distance before, (around 40 miles). Im trying to narrow down the problem so I can correct it. It may be that my riding position is too stretched out, because I have a long stem on the bike, combined with a narrow flat bar. Im going to try a set of barends or maybe a riser bar with a shorter stem in the future, (on a tight budget right now). Thanks for the suggestions, it gives me somewhere to start.
