What is the best mechanic book out there for the do-it-yourselfer? Someone who has a good understanding and is good with tools. Thank you in advance and ride safe.

Barnett's manual. Hands down the best. It fills a 3 ring binder and not only tells you what to do, but why. It also recommends the best tools for the job. If you're really into it, he also teaches a week long course in Colorado Springs.

Holy POOP that Barnetts is expesive...
I'd rather hunt the internet and spend that much money on my bike! I use Zinn's Road Bike book and supplement it with the internet...
20 CND for Zinn... still leaves 60 bucks for parts you didn't think you'd need, or a flashy new tool... never read barnetts but it'd have to be pretty damn spectacular to be worth 80 bucks... oh and never go out of date!

Does Barnett's really go into more detail than say, Zinn? I'm thinking of asking Santa for a copy (DVD version). My needs are fairly mainstream, but I need all the help I can get ;). So far, Zinn along with Park Tools and Sheldon web site is pretty good, although sometimes a little terse on subjects that I'd like to understand better.

I'm strongly hinting to the family that the new edition of the Zinn road bike book would make a great Xmas gift this year, thanks to the recommendations here. It's supposed to be out this month, I think. AND IT IS! I just checked Barnes&Noble online and it's available. Now if I can only wait a couple of months...
