I don't feel incredibly cofident in measuring them myself, but I plan to replace all the bearings in my Suburban and was curious if there is a way to look up and/or accrately measure ball bearings for replacement.

Also, I believe it is preferred to use loose bearings instead of caged. Would the same sized bearings be used? (I realize I would need more loose than caged bearings).

Thanks!

I beleive the bearings are the same size but Schwinn tends to use 9 instead of the more common ten . Cups and races are smaller on the inside on the schwinn vintage bikes.

Could be wrong though. Whatever the case the non-schwinn units that I have come across with nine balls were the same as the schwinn.

Some of the schwinn races are curved which could cause a problem with loose balls but I dont think the flat sided races would cause a problem.

Better wait for a less speculative response but if you don't get one thats my two cents.

The rear hub uses 1/4" balls, there are nine on each side.

The front hub uses 3/16" balls, there are 10 on each side.

The BB (crank) uses 1/4" balls. If you want to use loose balls, this is how to proceed: Apply some grease to the cup. Lay the ball bearings in the cup until they are all touching. Remove one ball, the remaining balls are the correct quantity to use.

The headset uses 1/8" balls. If you are using loose balls, the procedure for the BB should be followed to determine the correct number to use.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

I can move forward a little more confidently now!

Only one additional point in case anyone knows. What size are the small bearings in the front freewheel on a 1979 Suburban?

Thanks!

off topic:
How are you enjoying the fall rides? I haven't done much of anything since getting titanium screws inserted in my face on Friday... 6 more months and I'll have teeth!
