Commuting - Trek SoHO urban vs NYCbikes CrossSpeed...which better?

ARGH!!

I've come to the conclusion that I have to purchase yet another bike. But this time I need a commuter.
Those two bikes have caught my eye.
The Trek SoHO urban bike and the crossspeed bikes from nycbikes.com. I'm from new york by the way. Does anybody know which might be better for the dollar? I would rather go with the better priced nycbikes but would be willing to save up for the treks if you think I should. :|
Ideally, I would rather buy something used for even cheaper on ebay but nothing goods being listed lately.

The Soho is something I love, But I can't justify the price. I really like the Jamis Coda Elite which is sweet and less. The thing the Trek offers thats special is the cool handle bars that a U lock slips through and hangs from.

If you are smaller, there is a site with old Jamis Coda Elites for a good deal.

Nah, actually I meant the "ultimate new york bike" for $379.00 over at nycbikes.com. All those crossSpeed bikes uses that frame so I guess maybe an opinion on any of them would do. I was hoping that the crossspeed would be just as good as the SoHo. Because I really want to spend only in the $200 - $300 range because if the bike brakes or gets stolen I want to be able not to care very much...perhaps $400.00 if its really good. In contrast, if anything happened to my $2k of super road bike I would probably implode. :|

do NOT get a bike from nycbikes.. do a search, especially of the Ss/fixie forum, to see the wonderful history of crappiness they have. a good bike to go for would be the IRO (irocycle.com) if they have what you're looking for.

If you say to stay away from nycbikes then i will seriously consider not doing so. But as for irocycles.....heh heh I don't think I'm advanced enough yet to consider getting a fixie. Let me get in shape first and develop me skillz. ;)

There are other local bike builders in NYC such as Bklyn Machine Works and Swift. Of course, they don't sell any bikes for $400...

If you get an IRO, just get a single speed w/ like a 34-22 or something ridiculous like that, then change out the cogs as you get better.
