I roll with stock Rolf Vector 18F 20R wheelset. Properly tuned spokes, good tires, and innertubes are the trick. I use Maxxis and Panaracer tires, 700x25. The best innertubes I've used are Continental Race 28. If you dont know how to true your tires, learn. Being able to touch them up on the road can save your spokes. If you do your own wheel maintenance. Follow normal tire maintenance. On rides check you wheels when your at the halfway point. I use Pedro's Ice wax on my chain. I wax it before every ride. Remove all extra lub. Remember lub is for the chain only. Never put lub on the cassette or chain rings. Keep those clean. Use a teflon dry lub on the the shifters. Keep them clean to not atrack dirt. Have the BB, headtube, and axle bearings checked once a year. We stress the hell out of moving parts. Keeping clean and properly lubed prevents failures. I'm 260# and the Rolf's with 18-20's are proof that proper maintenance is the key to keep rolling not spoke count.

I'm 6'3", 225 lb. I've gotten back into cycling after a long time off as a way to lose weight with something fun and interesting.

But I'm not trying to get out of the 200+ club. I consider 200-205 to be my ideal weight. Thankfully, being tall means I feel no pressure to get into the 100's.

Im 6ft 215lbs. I'd like to get to 185-190. But for some reason my wieght never changes. I look thinner, but thats about it. I've learned the hard way to stay away from carbon seatposts, ti pedals, and cheap stems.

I haven't lost any weight because I eat like a pig, but I did hit 3 riding goals this spring/summer including a full century and two tough canyon climbs.

My bike is heavily modded and fits me like a glove, a real pleasure to ride. Lots of DA bits including brifters and ders.

6'1" 208lbs here...I ride a 2004 LeMond Tourmalet...I can't post a (another) pic at this time as my computer is fried...I am posting this from work. I was up to 296lbs a few years ago and had to get my weight under control....been a tough battle but it was worth it. I needt to lose another 20 to make me and my docs happy.

Cheers,

There is no flex that I can tell from this frame. This bike is super stiff, light, and can take a beating...that's why I chose it. This bike is 100% Clydesdale proof. I tested ALOT of bikes before buying this one and this one clearly stood out from some of the others.

I'm 6'3" and 210, which is about 10 lbs over my racing weight (off season weight gain = beer) and while I've been as light as 185 after five days of climbing on El Capitan in Yosemite, I have generally stabilized at around 200. I ride a custom Dave Arnold frame, (local S. Cal builder) which is sooo sweet. He used oversized Scandium mtn. bike tubing for the three main tubes with Easton carbon seat stays. Hung with Durace and Ksyrium SSC (racing) and Elite (training) wheels.

Thanks for posting a pic to show that not all "clydesdales" are fat...some of us are just big guys.

Do you have any more pictures of your bike? It sounds like a great build.

yep Kevin, size has both advantages and disadvantages for me. If it's flat (ala crits) then I love to be able to motor and hurt the small guys who make me suffer like a dog when the road goes up for any length of time.

Here's a couple of shots of my bike. It has a bit of a compact geometry which really makes a difference for me. My old standard geometry frames just don't have the ride this thing does. Plus for a bike my size it weighs in under 18 lbs and that is with some heavier stuff on like like stem, handlebars etc.

How did I miss this thread until today?

I am a clydsdale, 6' 2" and 260, down from 295.
My road bike is an Orbea Aspin. Broke three spokes on the rear wheel last month (2500 miles on the bike) so bought a new rear wheel. Campy record hub and open pro rim, Performance had a deal on it $180.00. Was told by more than one shop this should be OK for my weight.

My mountain bike is an Older Cannondale Super V1000. I keep thinking about removing the "Cannondale" from it and having "Clydsdale" made to put on in it's place.

This year I am joining a gym over the winter. I want to try and keep the weight loss going over the winter, instead of maintaining like I did last winter.

Hi. My name is Tim, and I'm a Clydesdale.

After over 15 years out of the saddle for the International Fat-n-Lazy Competitions, I returned to biking at a svelte 269. After almost two months of 5 mile per weekday commutes and 25 to 40 mile weekend rides, I'm down to 258. I'm proud to say that my 2006 Trek 1000 has held up like a champ, utterly refusing to buckle under my heft.

I got back into cycling for two reasons: 1) to get back into shape and lose some weight, and 2) because I love it. I raced sanctioned NBL and ABA BMX in high school, and rode an all-Campy Bianchi for a few years after high school.

I hope to get down to the 215 range. Any less than that and I'd look sickly, because I'm 6'3" tall. :-)

Tim.

I agree...the small guys definitely put a whooping on me in the hills. I can maintain pretty good on the flats and do alot of passing on the down hill but I suffer when the road goes up. This winter I am going to leave the weight lifting alone and stop drinking 3-5 protein shakes per day and try to get my weight down to 195 or so. The bulk of my weight is upper body muscle mass that I am so ready to lose now that I am into cycling.

Wow!!! That is nice looking bike. Does the builder have a website?

I put a set of Velocity Deep V's on my beater bike. I had them built up with 36 spokes front and rear. They are bomb proof. I paid $288 for the set, delivered.

1. Being fat SEVERELY increases chances of diabetes.
2. I can't answer on custom builds, but factory 36 spoke, 3 cross wheels with V-rims (Alex) are readily available at about $100 per pair. These have been plenty strong for my 260# carcass.
3. The only "racey" alternative to the above Clydesdale wheels that I've found are Campy Vento wheels, which are ALSO bulletproof and have been plenty strong for me.

Happy shopping!

Watch the wheels if you get a flat. I got a flat, hit a pothole, and WHAM! Right into the shop to be trued.

Then again, that'd probably happen with any wheelset. *shrug*

6'4", 240. Bought an Atlantis three years ago, and I LOVE it--but I was down at the Rivendell shop this spring and they had a 64cm Rambouillet, an ex-demo bike, built up with 105 components for $1000, and I snapped it up. Now the Rambo's set up for smooth roads (32mm tires, lightish wheels etc) and the Atlantis has big hunk wheels, 37mm tires and a Carradice saddle bag. Both use Brooks B-17 saddles and barcon shifters, in friction mode, just because I like them. And I'm going home tonight and put fenders on the Atlantis for the winter.

I probably would have left the 200 Lbs category if I wasn't so into weight training a long time ago but I plan on hitting 190 by the end of the year getting down to about 8% BodyFat.

If do get down to 190 yeah it will suck because I wont be a Clydesdale any longer but I will then be a member of the "That Guys F%$king Ripped Club" an I believe that club has better benefits :)

6' and 205ish. I've only lost 5-10#'s  and been back at it for a little over 3 months or 2348 miles. So I think the weight is just moving around as my clothes are definitely a bit more loose. On the same hand I don't deprive my body of the nutrients it needs to perform so I guess I'll just let it sort itself out.

I ride 3 bikes, a Fetish Position fixed gear with 32 hole Mavics/formula hubs. A mountain bike with Sun rims and Nuke Proof hubs (can't remember the other specifics), and a Giant TCR that had some POS wheels and just got a set of R550's. I really like to sprint and get the bike swinging back and forth and everything has done fine except those POS's.

I don't understand the climbing issue people are talking about. Bigger is typically stronger??? and skinny/aero isn't as much of an advantage? I personally climb fairly well and do decent on the flats, just don't quite have the stamina in the long haul at high speeds as I found out yesterday :o

Boy this is some thread! I am 6'2" and about 210. I was 230lbs nine months ago, but a few miles have helped to change that. I have not ridden like I wanted in the last month and can feel me getting fatter... the issue in weight is, I put on leg muscle while I am taking off fat... so my weight does not change dramatically. So while I am getting fat again, my legs are getting smaller.

I went out for a 32 miler today... and hope this is the jump start I need to get focused again. I love trying to loose weight this time of year... Halloween Candy, then Thanksgiving food, followed by loads of Christmas Parties and New Year candy... a total challenge. Eating right decent during the holidays, to me, is like trying to do a century... quite a challenge.

I started riding to loose weight. Then my little motorcycle racing buddies started to smoke me... so now I want to get down to 180 ish and race!!

I ride a couple bikes, but my favorite is a 2005 Bianchi 928 Carbon Lugged. The 928L is an all Carbon Frame with Campy Record Group. If I put my Carbon Campagnolo Bora Wheels on the bike it weighs 16.4 lbs! So scoff to all those who think us big guys can't ride Carbon or have light stuff. I won't go to Ti peddles or Ti Skewers, but 16.4 with a 61CM frame is great in my opinion!

Hi, fellow gravity-enhanced riders! Doncha love going down hills?

I'm 6'2" or so, and spent this past summer in the 230s despite over 2500 miles on my '04 Specialized Roubaix Pro. My beloved bike is currently out of commision - after doing the JDRF Asheville century on October 8, I found cracks in my rear rim (DA WH-7800). It's in to Shimano for warranty replacement. I'm sure my weight did a lot of the damage, but I also have some pretty craptastic West Michigan roads that I need to learn to stay away from. I'm planning on a set of stronger wheels for next year either way; the Velocity Nuvians look pretty nice.

I was pretty pleased with my fitness this year despite the lack of weight loss; I managed the hills around Asheville OK despite my double crank and lack of equivalent hills to train on. I certainly didn't keep much track of my diet. Next year, maybe wheel preservation will give me some better motivation to drop another 20 pounds or so. Seeing this made my heart skip:

Crack is for crackheads  . Here is a photo of the type cracks I am dealing with, I would like to think its because of the age of the rim (not mine) but my weight probably has had something to do with it. The Araya Aero One rim is soon to be replaced by a Araya Areo 4 rim that is going to be better I hope  .

Hello all,

I am 6'6", currently 238, was down to 220 for racing season, my goal is 195 which is the lowest possable weight I can be at. I have no upper body weight gain due to muscles (can not maintain them). Even at say 205 or so I will still be a cylsdale.... I hope to be down around 225 - 230 ish for christmas, and by summer be at my goal weight... although because of fat accumilation in other areas that are not under my control (glad to have it though) I will not be under 12 percent body fat though...

I ride a 2100 in 63 cm with lots of lite parts... no problems.

And I am not 5' 100 pounds so you can draft off of me...

I am 184cm and 91kg after dinner, or a little over 6 foot tall and a little under 201 pounds. I am overweight, though in my defence, I have quite a stocky build, with wide hips and shoulders. I imagine at my ideal weight I'd be around 185lbs, so no longer a clydesdale.

I've only just started cycling again after a couple of months hiatus, and I'm making a conscience effort to cut back on the junk food, and drinking lots of water, hopefully it goes well. I'm 17, turning 18 in a few weeks.

I went from 5'11" 208 lbs on April 1 of 2005 to 162lbs. as of this AM. After not cycling for 5 years due to a massive medical cluster f*** that I will probably post as a separate thread here - in large part because some other members may learn a thing or two that could potentially help them. That's more weight than I ever lost before - and I'm actually a bit lighter than I was when I raced regularly from 1991-1999. Hoping to race again.

With no offense intended towards the Clydesdales here (I'm impressed at how well some of you big guys can ride/climb, really), it's very good not to be one anymore. When I started riding again I was about 195+, and I can tell you that dragging 30+ lbs. more than I currently weigh up the hills around here was a bit much. I actually had to telephone my wife (thank god for cellphones) to sag wagon me home a few times in May. I live on a hill which sucks so hard I've nicknamed it Mt. Doom - and I have made it up without spousal assistance EVERY day since the end of May : ).

In the ultimate concession to age (despite my weight loss) and Mt. Doom I currently ride a 12-25 cluster. This after starting when I moved here with an 11-21 and eventually surrendering to a 12-23. But there are times I need that 25 to get up Mt. Doom after 50-60+ hard miles. 1 mile of 350' vertical gain with 15-16%+ grades. And the worst part is the last half mile. Oh well. We have nice views : ).

I'm 6'1" hanging around 225lbs. I have muscular/athletic build. I played football through college. The chances of me getting out of the clydesdale class are very slim. That would mean getting lighter that I've been since high school. Plus, my wife has protested the thought of me getting down into the skinny class.

Last winter I built up a S-Works frame. Last week I scored an old GT frame off ebay. Gonna build up a commuter around town bike this winter...

This is me at last months Seagull. I was 208 (6ft 0in tall) that day. Hopefully i wont be long for the clydesdale world (no offense meant). I started the Summer at 250+ riding that same 8 year old IF. The lighter i get, the better it goes!

Took up riding in the 80's for fun on Fuji road bike... was skinny then. Enjoyed running more at the time, but body couldn't take it. Dabbled in jogging and swimming over the years, got back on the bike steady with goal of first century, plus fat guy article in BICYCLING mag.Keeping myself in shape so I don't have an MI while SCUBA diving(man that gear is heavy) Started commuting to work a couple days a week just to see if I could do it, and thumb my nose at 3.39 prices at the gas pump at the time. Recently bought Raleigh SC30 for comfort purposes commuting 30 miles RT, been modifying it as I go along. 210lbs and almost 5'9". What can I say- I like to eat :)
