Well i am 32 5"11 203lbs up from 185 about a year ago. I hope to be loosing some weight over the winter. I ride a 2005 Trek 5000 full carbon and love it. I also ride a Bianchi Sass single speed off road. Not sure how to post pics of my bikes sorry. No problems with either bike.

I have experienced no problems with cranks. I am using the Truvativ Rouleur Carbon compact crank and it's the best upgrade that I have ever done to a bike. I have used Ultegra 9 and 10 cranks on several other bikes and have never had an issue with any of those either. On my beater bike I have Campy Daytona cranks and they are solid as well.
Are you having problems with any particular crankset?

I guess I fall into this category lately myself (hence me getting back into riding).
I'm 24, 6'1" 210, so not huge, but definitely softer around the edges than I have ever been before. I was a hardcore XC MTBer (at least three hard rides a week) but a bad wrist injury has kept me off the trails until surgery.
I'm starting to get a little chunky so it's time to do something about it. I'm going to pick up a cheap roadie and see if I can't get back down to 175. I'm still in the market, so anyone selling their bike or knows of a good deal, any insight is appreciated :)

After much searching, I purchased Mavic Open Pro wheelset w/dura ace hub. Hopefully, they will be a solid training wheelset. With shipping they were $330 from Performance. Next step, advice please on a good set of clydesdale tires to go on them.

I'm riding a 54cm 2006 Trek 1000 and love it. If you're not too worried about racing or what not, it's a good value, though I'd spring for the 1500 if i were to do it all over again. The guy I just bought my jersey off had a 64cm  So they do come in big sizes. The 1000 ran me around $650.

6'2" 250 here...though I was 235 when I started riding...long story mom died during the holidays and I was not riding at all..On a mission to remove myself from this category this year...I ride a Lemond Reno and I love it...was putting between 40-70 miles week prior to the Ride for the Roses, then quit(mom ill). I thought about getting some different rims to go faster and then I remembered the best way to accomplish this, lose a little weight..Everyone keep riding, it helps!

Good luck on your diet and congratulations on the initial weight loss.
My plan for this spring is to be out of the Clydesdayle category as well. I am 6'1" and now down to 207 from 230 since October. I was in the same boat as you regarding keeping up with the pack on group rides. I went on my first group ride last weekend since losing some weight and the difference is dramatic. The hills that used to send me WAY behind didn't even phase me last weekend. My goal is to be down to 195 by spring and 188 by end of summer.
Keep up the good work.

I started riding seriously last May and despite travelling every other week for work I managed to ride about 2400kms from May to Oct. including one Century ride. According to www.bikejournal.com I burned over 88,000 calories and managed to loose zero lbs. Nothing else changed in my eating habits or anything so keep in mind that some of us lucky folks are genetically engineered to be Clydesdales!

some of us lucky folks are genetically engineered to be Clydesdales!
I have to disagree with this remark about being genetically engineered to be a clydesdale. I rode the entire year last year, approximately 4000 miles, and did not lose a single pound and actually gained weight. By September I thought I was "genetically engineered to be Clydesdale". I started doing some research and decided to change my eating habits. In the first month that I changed my eating habits and rode the same amount of time/distance, my weight started dropping and my body started changing dramatically.
I now eat alot more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and stopped eating fast food, chips and sweets. I eat 1500 calories per day of the right types of food and actually have more energy than I ever had while eating like I used to eat. I have always drank water but I now drink 16, 8oz servings of water per day or more.
With some discipline and determination, the weight can be lost. I am a perfect example. I have not weighed less than 220 pounds in almost 3 years. I was up to 230 pounds when I decided to do something about it. I WILL be less than 200 in the next 5-6 weeks.

6' 3", 275 pounds, 48 years old, and fighting trim would be somewhere in the 240 range. I hate spindly-legged climbing farts. (Not really, but I love saying that.) Started riding in high school. A friend got me going (we still ride together 30 years later) and we had visions of being racers. An utter lack of talent spoiled that idea, but I learned how to ride in a pack and to love the bike. I bought a Bob Jackson frame with my first paycheck from my first post-high school job. It got stolen in 1992. I now have a 2000 Lemond Buenos Aires frame with miscellaneous components, a 1994 Trek 520, a Burley tandem (currently living at a friend's so he can ride with his 7 year old son) and, my latest and greatest love, a 1967 (that is not a typo) Paramount P-15, repainted by Ed Litton a very cool dark charcoal gray color with chrome headlugs and white pin striping. Stunningly sweet ride - I bought the frame on eBay with the idea of making it into a commuter and it has become my ride of choice. I had Ed add all of the modern-era braze-ons, and there is nothing period-correct about the components, although they have a distinct BOB-Rivendell flavor: this is a rider, not a museum piece. (Ed, by the way, does phenominal work at a reasonable price - gotta be patient, though.) Rode Livermore CA to Washington DC one summer while in college, have done some loaded touring and supported touring since. Mostly ride from the door, getting slower all the time and not letting it bother me. I do event rides when the mood strikes. Haven't done a century in a couple of years, but hope to in 2006. I ride 36 spoke wheels on everything except the tandem - those are 48's. I learned the hard way that 32 holes just ain't enough for me. I like wool jerseys and lycra bib shorts. I bought one of the very first Bell helmets - you know, the ones that looked like an inverted bthtub - in the mid-70's and have refused to ride sans helmet ever since. Getting run off the road by a truck (he was stupid, not malicious) and ending up in the middle of a lot of sharp, pointy rocks will give you religion.
I don't exercise. I don't work out. I don't train. I ride a bike. I just love the feeling of being out on the road. Well, maybe not when I'm going up ten miles of Mt. Diablo and gravity is not being my friend . . . . :-) On the other hand, people just *love* drafting me, and I drop like a rock. Almost as gracefully, too.

We have to remember that not everyone has goals that are to loose weight or get down to under 200lbs. But you are right about eating habits being essential to proper weight loss. I'm 6'1 and generally weigh around 220-225. Come summer time I'll be in the 215-220 range. But I'm already pretty lean. I played football a for a large part of my life and lift weights regularly. And my wife has warned me about losing to much weight from cycling. I guess I may be a minority with many of the clydsedales around here are looking to lose. I think that's great. Just remember that there are those of use around proud to be a Clyde. ;)

6'2" 280. Was down to 240, but took a little time off. Ive been mostly running- did the Chicago marathon in Ocober at 270, but hopped back on the bike last weekend (Felt F70). It was an eye opener as to how different running is from cycling- I was huffing and puffing after only going five miles. The extra 40 also makes the bike a heck of a lot less comfortable. I'm training for a couple half marathons, but am going to work a cross training ride back in on Sundays.
I have used the holidays to reclaim Clydesdale status. Going into November I weighed in around 195. However, the bike found the basement with the short days, I spent a week on a beach in Mexico having nachos and quesadillas delivered to me while I lounged in a chair, and then I ate my way through the holidays. I'm now at 204 which is still seven pounds less than when I bought the bike last summer.
I've got a 2005 Trek 1000 and have not had any significant problems with mine. I had my wheels trued twice last year (rode about 1100 miles) but that is as much a function of bad roads as it is my weight.

You ran the marathon at 270 pounds!? You must have knees, and a will, of iron!!! Sasquatch, I salute you!!! I'm at a post-holidays 235. My resolution: Hit 215 by May. To do so I know I've got to cut out Golden Oreos binges, most bread & potatoes, and emphasize the veggies, fruit, whole grains, lean protein.... And put in the miles, too (Merlin, generic track bike).

Thanks for reiterating the admonitions about shifting from refined sugar and processed carbos to the healthy stuff. The processed food is also jammed with sodium which jacks up blood pressure. I need to hear these messages, counter-propaganda, repeatedly because all day long I'm hearing advertisements encouraging me to eat and drink junk. Here's another good motivator: rent Morgan Spurlock's documentary indicting the fastfood industry: Supersize Me. It's entertaining AND persuasive.
I'm also prepping for the bike version of the LA Marathon. 235 pounds & counting.....down, I hope.

Ha, I checked out of the Clydedale category on Tuesday. I'm finally under 200 after two years or so. Just took a little diet change and getting back on the bike and I'm 198 and falling.
I can't believe how fast the weight is coming off since I started logging my caloric intake (http://www.bioweblogic.com) and making a conscious effort to exercise a little more.
So to all the 'Dales out there looking for some motivation... it can be done!

Congrats on that!!! I am trying to checkout as well. I am down to 204 from 230. Another two weeks or so and I will weigh less than 200 for the first time in about 5 years. My riding has skyrocketed since I have started losing weight. I am doing the same thing you are doing by logging my caloric intake and eating better/smarter.
SaladShooter, how much did you lose?
Winter is killing me, I was down to 227 in mid October, but I'm already up to 238 and trainer miles aren't fun. Thinking about learning to rollerblade for wintertime work.
I want a site where I can do the calorie counting, but get it for free ;)

SaladShooter, how much did you lose?
So far only about 15 pounds. I was never WAY out of shape, but I just couldn't manage to drop pounds no matter I tried (or so I told myself). I ate healthy, but I ate TOO MUCH. My portions were what was killing me.
Also, a wrist injury (ironically NOT while mountain biking, but rather slipping off a small retaining wall I have jumped off of since I was about 8 years old) has kept me off the bike for a year or more. Problem was my eating habits didn't change, I got a great paying, but low activity desk job, and you know the rest. Gained 30 lbs or since I was in racing shape.
Now I am watching everything that goes into my body, staying away from BS fad diets and just eating healthier and smaller portions. Just got back on the bike again and couldn't be happier. The weight is seriously falling off now that I am back on two wheels. My goal is 175 by the middle/end of summer, I have a $100 bet going with a friend on who can lose more and keep it off. He doesn't bike, it's a lock ;)

6'7" 275# here....
I guess I qualify, hehe....I'm about 40# overweight now, but when I'm in good "riding shape", my buddies fight for my wheel....and that's ok...I like to "help" them. I LOVE doing centuries the most.....I hope to do several this year. When you're this tall, it's pretty easy to "hide" 40 extra lbs....but you sure do FEEL the extra weight, especially on hills...I don't worry about saving weight on bike parts...shoot, if I want to save a few grams here and there I could just get a friggin' haircut once in a while...I want my parts to last! I ride a Cannondale 66cm caad 3 with Shimano 105 components.....that's all I need.....I'll post a pic when I get a good one in the light....cheers!

Good point you bring up there. I know road cycling is all about being fast and light, but do you ever get the feeling the cycling industry caters to the thin? We are the fattest country on the planet and if anyone needs to be on a bike, its "America". So (at least) make some cycling apparel for the "Big and Tall". Wouldn't they make a killing?
Go to Jensonusa.com for over size Jerseys. The MTB folks cloths are loose fit. Azonic and Fox cloths are made for the down hill folks. But I wear it for winter riding. Very high quality made and looks sharp. I like the Fox racing gloves too. Also try Velowear.com, thats Voler online store. The do have 3X. I'm 6'1" 260# and the club cut 3x is not tight fitting. Performancebike.com and nashbar.com have good deals on clothes from time to time.

Just joined the forum, now I know there's a name for people like me. Clydesdale... I can go with that. I'm 50, 6'4" and 250, working my way back down to 230 or so. Just got back into road riding after 15 years of on-again/off again mtn riding. Decided I wasn't as immortal as the younger friends I used to ride trails. Another friend was trading up to an Orbea, sold me his almost new Roubaix. I had forgoten how much I like the speed of road riding.
hey yall...i'm new to the forums..though i've been kinda poking around as a guest...really liking the Clyde thread. =)
i'm definitely a clyde... 23, 6'3 255 :o ...build is like a linebacker who stopped playing football (ie a bit soggy around the midsection) high muscle mass in my thighs and upper body. Years of basketball and road running have me in for something less impact. used to ride alot when i was a kid up until i turned 15 and could start driving..
i work 4 miles from work, fairly hilly... i seriously woke up one day and 'eureeka!!' i'm going to buy a bike and bike to work. also i live by the Pac Coast Hwy...though it would be a good idea to ride on the weekends.
i'm young, recent college grad, got a good job but not trying to break the bank for a good bike. until a couple weeks ago i didnt know a derailleur from a...from a...well i didn't know crap about bikes. hours of research later, i'm starting to get it.
anyway, i've been to my LBS(lingo ha!) and dude there suggested an OCR1 or the Specialized Tricross( i like the versatility of that)... the Seqouia.. or Also looking at a trek 1000, 1200 or the pilot 1.0/1.2...so thats my shortlist...as you can tell my price point is around a grand, much more than and i think my girl will break up with me =)
"you dont need that"..."this one's fine! look two wheels and a handle bar"...she doesn't get it.
any help with a selection considering my clyde status? also... further reccomendations would be cool too
thanks! :D
5'10" and 255lbs. I will be riding an '05 LeMond Big Sky S as soon as I get all my gear purchased and the weather gets above 45F.
I'm definately a clydesdale! 6'1" 250. I was under 245 last year.. but I slacked bigtime last year with riding and gained back some weight! :( I'm working overtime now.. spinning 1-2 times a week at the Y to get my legs back and shed that gut!
I have an '04 Felt 65. Off the top of my head.. I'm going to say it's a 60. I haven't had it out since the fall though.

I have two non-descript XL REI jerseys, as well as one pair of Performance basic black XL shorts that are in fine shape but too big for me. Free to anyone willing to pay postage. The jerseys should easily fit someone with 48" chest (REI's XL seems to be more like XXL), and the shorts should fit 38"-40" waists.
All items are used, but freshly laundered and in good shape. Figure no more than $8 for shipping, depending on where you live.

This bike is pretty light, but also pretty tough. I did like the old wheels better from a acceletarion and weight perspective, but they had high speed oscillation problems, along with rim separation at just over 1,000mi. These new wheels are actually faster, although they don't feel like it...instead of the manic panic that I had with teh old wheels, these take my weight so well that they are just smooth and stable. Sadly they weight a freaking ton though....fortunately that doesn't seem to make it any harder to get up 3 flights of stairs, so it's all good :D

5'8", 240 lbs checkin in at age 41....longtime bodybuilder. I'm not sloppy fat - probably around 16% bodyfat. Started riding 12 yrs ago at 205 and got down to 185 doing about 120 miles/week; went into IT, stopped riding and ballooned to 240. 2 months ago started training for triathlons as a weight loss measure and I hope to be 220 by year end and 205 by 2008.
I ride a 10 year old custom BREW Reynolds 731OS tubing, 8 speed Dura-Ace, Ksyrium Elite wheels. Socking money away for a Felt F2C or Merlin Extralight frame. I'd like to ride 2,500 miles this year and 5,000 the next.
I like Performance Elite Bib Shorts but I haven't found good jerseys for short stocky people. Castelli was very tight in XL. Canari XXL was too long.
I used to have a matching track bike just like it but I sold it.
