Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am 6' 3" 386lbs, I guess I qualify!
... My biggest concern is quality of materials, lower spoke count rear hub, and "J" bend spokes. At a lower spoke count, the "J" bend is the weak spot in the power output. I would seriously consider these wheels for myself if the spoke count were 32.
I bought a set of these 40 spokers
I would not ride less than 36 spokes

Wow now I am wondering if I made a mistake buying a Caad 8 I am 50 yrs old 265 lbs and just bought this bike 2 months ago it is constantly giving me problems chain breaking spoke breaking.I thought it was the bike but I guess its me I was going to upgrade to a trek madone or a super six but not now.Is there any road bike any better for big men or will I be having these problems with all bikes? My lowest weight in adult life was 235 and I looked sick. Some of us are just meant to be big.

Lather, I bought a Fuji Newest 1.0 2 months ago when I weighted 265ish. No issues at all except I now weigh 240 - I've rode it like I stole it.

6ft, 220lbs, funny I don't feel heavy, got a bit of a beer belly, hangs over a 38 waist that's pulling in a bit since I started riding again. Got back into cycling after 20 years mainly due to the fact I have trouble running since I screwed my back up. Feel fine now, no back pains but can't get back into running. Ride a steel frame base model Bianchi Campione I'll be putting clipless pedals on as soon as the bank balance allows, so far the only other thing I've swapped out from stock is the tires - Continental GP All weathers, live in New Jersey. Loving being back in the saddle, wish I had got a bike years ago but upwards and onwards.
What weight are we all aiming for then? I feel fine as I am. Mrs might prefer me to lose the gut but I can live with it, I'm 44 not 24.

Thought I'd join in the forum and throw out my ticker (below). Always been a fan of the Bud Clydesdales, so proud to be called one. Currently weigh about 240 and hope to drop to 190. I'm working on upgrading my poor fitting Giant road bike to a cyclocross bike. This will be the first new bike I've owned since 1983 so I'm very excited and hope to keep riding even in the winter months. The success stories on this forum are really outstanding and I hope that I will have some of the the same fortitude and success.

Currently weighing in at 213lb a bit heavy for a cyclist,I am six foot tall so don't look to bad in civvies.Would like to get down to 180 ideally.Going for a gradual weight loss over the winter.I don,t want to lose any strength.
I think being a heavy rider is sometimes beneficial,as in, on windy days. Its just I always get dropped on the hills.
Two of my bikes are steel, the other is alluminium and I like Mavic Aksium and Kysium wheels, they are just about bombproof.Just as well considering the state of the minor roads round here.

I used to ride bikes as a kid but as an adult I've managed to retain a lot of weight. I'm 5'11" and 260 lbs. I recently picked up a Fuji Absolute 3.0 from Performance Bikes for fitness, commuting, and recreation. It's not the fanciest or most technical bike but I feel good on it so far and it is a blast to have a new form of mobility. Been lurking here for a little bit and love seeing the supportive nature of this community. It's good to know that I am not alone.

Sounds like a good bike to me. That was one of the things that put me off buying a bike for so long, so many of them seemed overly complicated.

I'm 6-0, 250 and I'm hell bent on getting light, light enough to finish Mountains of Misery on Memorial Day weekend 2012. I've been riding since 2003 and lightest I've gotten in 215. I want to way past that by the end of May.

5'10 and 246 pounds here. Its weird, as when I started, I haven't lost weight, but gained. I've been eating much better, waist size has dropped but I am not stronger in anyway. Maybe all of the weight lost has come back in stomach content?
Newbie here. Definitely a clyde 194cm and 125kg and 47y.old.
Been riding since the start of Aug. Dropped maybe 8 pound but lost a heap of weight in my legs and around the face.
I really need to increase my riding to a regular 4-5 days per week and am going to enter into a 600mi charity ride (Sydney to Surfers Paradise) to get some focus on riding more consistently and achieve the goal.
I have no real weight goal....100kg (220#) is way behind me (that was me at 27 and running every day) so maybe a health 110kg would work.
All I really want is to lose this gut but I am MAMIL and proud of it.
BTW Just building up a Look 585 Pro Team XXL with Dura Ace as my new ride.

Yup
I'm getting back into biking after being grounded due to pregnancy complications where I couldn't walk 1-2 days after a 5 minute bike ride, ouch! I'm currently at 220 lbs which I'm not terribly proud of.
We're biking baby to daycare and today I biked to work for the first time for a year and a half. That's a 20km roundtrip. :)
I have two Trek FX 7.3 bikes that me and my fiancé ride. Really nice bikes and now that winter is here we're riding them with spiked tires. Now that's an interesting experience. :) I also own a Trek MTB but it hasn't gotten much use lately. Maybe next spring/summer I'll dare go offroad again.
After a whole year of nasty physical pain I have a totally new appreciation for activities that involve exercise. I always thought I was a fairly healthy person and took exercise for granted. I was only 25 when things went sour. I love biking with my family and want to get fit to reduce my chance of enduring last year all over again. :) No specific weight goal for now, just enjoying to ride, build stamina and get into better physical health. I hate feeling so out of breath. Weight loss will help with all of this. :)

I started riding beginning of August after a friend, who is a doctor convinced me of the benefits of riding. I am 6'1 and was 240 lbs at the time. Bought a Trek hybrid and a trailer to pull my 3 and 6 year olds and bought a CycleOps JetFluid trainer to ride on days I didn't get out. Started eating healthier and smaller portions and ultimately my stomach started shrinking where I just couldn't eat as much.
4 months later, I'm now right around 195 lbs. Got so much into cycling that I bought a Cervelo R3 about 2 months ago as a reward for all the weight loss. Am trying to get to 190 lbs., but the last 5 seem to be the hardest.
I used to ride about 30 minutes, 8-9 miles a day, but in the last two weeks have upped it to 1 hour rides of approximately 17-18 miles.
Hang in there, I have been inspired by this thread and many of you who have gone before...

I believe that I fully qualify as a Clydesdale. I'm 58 years old, 5'11" tall, and currently weigh about 295, down from 315. When I was in the Navy, back in the early 1970s, I used to weigh 175. I'd like to get much closer to 200 lbs. To achieve this, I have several bikes, including a stationary bike, an old Schwinn XR7. I'm finding it harder to drop the weight and build muscle at my present age, but realize that I need to do this to possibly conquer my Type II Diabetes.
Good luck to all those struggling to fight the Battle of the Bulge!

An update on mine:
Last weigh-in at the local VA clinic puts me at 208. Goal is 180ish. Getting there by doing 10-15 miles a day, 5 days a week. Also, not eating "by the clock". I eat when I'm hungry, and have reduced the amount I eat by a great amount. There are many days that I eat only one meal, and I have noted that on those days I have the least activity. Not due to the lack of food, but the lack of activity isn't screaming for food I don't need.

This is my honey, brand new. Been commuting for the last three years on a blue Moulton TSR 8 (28 mile round trip) and just upgraded to a road bike, the TSR 30. Medical shenanigans have hosed up my metabolic rate something horrible and as one of my hobbies is cooking (speciality curries) it seems to leave me little choice - give up cooking or get back to biking! I did the latter three years back. Currently stable at 218, I hope to get under 200 this year. Trouble is I cannot commute by bike every day as my job requires me at other locations on occasion - but we'll ride as much as we can and cook as little as we can - well, maybe use a little less butter.

I'm nearly 300lbs and 5'8" and I spent the first half of last year biking >100 miles a week. Then I took a week off from work and biked from San Francisco to LA as part of the AIDS/Lifecycle. I have the muscles of a weightlifter and endurance exercise has always been somewhere between a struggle and excruciating. It still is. During training I lost 5lbs and gained bigger chest and back muscles as well as enormous legs.
I mostly trained on a Cannondale Bad Boy with the lefty fork but shortly before the ride I got a Specialized Roubaix, heavily modified, of course. We swapped out the drive components for mountain biking ones (triple chain ring, etc), giving me a true granny gear for getting up mountains. I also got rid of the dropped handlebars and went with a carbon fiber straight bar and V-pull break levers.
I've climbed mountains with the Roubaix and bombed back down them at over 40mph. At first I was terrified for my safety, but it not only held together, its performance was near magical.
For bopping around town, I'm getting a Budnitz Bikes Model 2. It should be here in a couple of weeks.

Man my mind hurts... Why would you take a killer road frame and do that to it ... You could had gotten the compact crank and had a killer small chain ring i am surprised 1 a bike shop would do that and 2 the components would actually fit.. You should had just gotten a cycle cross rig... also why put a flat bar on it You have a lot more hand positions on drop bars... I am 6ft 8in tall and 300 pounds i can climb with the best except those really light guys on carbon bikes i use a 54 42 chain ring my cluster is 9 speed 13-23...

last week i will be able to post in this thread :D; 5'11" fluctuated 205-215, at 201 now. Was big on high impact sports till i blew out my knee twice and put on 30+ lbs because of it. Dr. said i got knee's of a 50 year old man (im 24), told me to do cycling instead.
My goal is to get to 185 again.
I'm at about 320, 5'7". I've gained weight since starting graduate school in the fall--I'm a stress eater--so I've decided it's time to take care of that. I love the sense of freedom I get on a bike so it was a no-brainer to pick it back up after several years off. I'm also an avid swimmer. I would post a picture of my bike but it's not anything fancy and as I've already encountered a bit of cyclist snobbery here I'll just say it's a pretty standard 80s roadbike, though I do love my bike very much.

It's been a while since I've posted in these forums. I'm finally under 200 for the first time since 2004. Nothing to do with riding a bike to achieve it, just plain diet. I can't wait to hit the bike now that I weigh less. I live in Staten Island Ny and the hills in this borough made riding painful.

Although I am nearly a stone under minimum weight for this section I still read all the posts in here because it is all too easy to slip back into an old habit, and training tips / advice for keeping weight off is always good.

Good luck to everybody else on here with their weight loss.

The Roubaix is one of the most comfortable frames ever made. I bought it thinking I'd go with dropped handlebars, but the normal ones were too narrow. I tried wider drop bars and they still didn't feel right - I really didn't like having my hands so close together and I'd never use the dropped position - problems not only caused by my belly, but also by a lifetime of lifting weights. So we put on flat bars with mountain bike extension grips - I still have about 3 useful positions for my hands.
As for the gearing, I now have some of the lowest gearing possible and as I make my way uphill at my weight, I'm thankful for every tooth less that my granny gear has.
My bike shop put a lot of time into this bike and it's worked for over 1000 miles now, so they did something right.

6'2", Biking took me from 400+ down to 320 ( so far ) I haven't crushed my 2010 Specialized Allez Sport yet, 2,000 + miles on it, 2 spokes 1 back tire worn out. That bike is GREAT ! only had to true the rims 2 maybe 3 times ( no lie) 80% of my riding is on a "rail to trail" path, average 16.5 mph, ride 24 miles round trip to work ( they have a shower ! haha) twice a week + spin classes. I wear riding bibs with shorts and a t-shirt over them haha. not thin enough yet to pull that off. hooked on road bikes ! never gonna give it up, it saved my life !

Hello all. I have found this forum very motivating. I have been a bike rider in a past life (I quit riding 7 or 8 years ago) and have always been a Clydesdale. After I hit 300lbs a couple of months ago and the doc put me on HBP meds I figured it was time to get off my butt and start to ride again. I bought a great new bike (a Redline Conquest Pro cyclocross rig) I figured the beefier setup would be less likely to be crushed by my fairly significant weight. I only got my bike a week ago and have got a few rides in. My first rides have been so short (12 miles) and painful that I realize that it is going to be hard to get back into cycling shape but I am ready to do it.

In 2010 I went to the doctors office for a sore back and weighed in at 319. That summer my work was hyping Bike To Work Week and for laughs I did Google's bicycle directions and found there was a pretty direct route that was 3/4 commuter bike path. When we'd bought our house there was a Freespirit Britney in the garage so I took that to my LBS, they were able to get it ride-able. After commuting 3-4 times a week for ~2 months I decided to invest in a serious bike and got my Cannondale Quick 4. I started doing some longer rides in 2011, culminating in a 44 mile tour I completed last August. Today I'm down to 255 and I just bought my first road bike this past weekend, a Cannondale Synapse Carbon 5. Here are some pics.

That's awesome! One of these days I'm going to hit that scale in the morning and see 249 and it'll be special. I just need to NOT celebrate with cake :)
Hi i just bought a 2012 Cannondale Super Six Di2. I am right now 243 but hope to be under 190 sometime in the next year or so. I started weightlifting and cardio about two months ago and have lost 18 pounds and kept my muscle. I have slowed down on weight loss the last two weeks but have more energy and my heart rate is lower now while riding or using a machine at the gym. From reading through the other threads I am sure to break some spokes or get a flat soon but hopefully not.

373 here... :(
I've always been big. I played football in college and never truly lost all the weight. But back around 2000 - 2002 I lost 170lbs. and got to the point where I was doing 60 mile rides, biking 35 miles daily and doing triathlons. I was around 235lbs. In 2008 I was t-boned by a car and spent the next year in physical therapy. I gained so much weight in that time between being layed up, depression and the pain that I ballooned to where I am now. I finally got back on my bike today and I have almost no clothing. That's step 1 at this point. Find a jacket, some shirts and some shoes that fit who I am now.

okay been a long time..
Been over 220 since 1995. I blame my kid for the weight gain as he was a poor eater. Well time goes on, we moved to Connecticut from Louisiana and in 2002 I was up to 255. I got down to 225 in 2007 with better eating, weights, and 2,500 on the bike that year.
In 2008 we moved to Alabama, and the weight came back (260). I'm a bit of a workaholic and was working 80 hours a week. Weight gain, blood pressure up, tryglycerides sky high.. got pneumonia on top of it all. Quit my job as my employer ran out of money, and after getting clearance from Dr I started riding again. Got down to 240 and then got a job working crazy hours, but very active hours - lost weight again, 225. Then got another new job, but had less time to exercise gained weight, doctor put me on a new med and I gained 10 lbs rather quickly.
So I ended up getting a nasty sinus infection, Dr said I was exhausted and my BP was up again. Time for a change. She thought it best I quit the job, and I was going to quit in the summer as they want me to get a second degree and pay no money for it, or give me any money once I get it. I don't make a lot now, so I gambled and resigned. Exhaustion is gone, sinus infection gone, blood pressure normal. Tryglycerides - NORMAL!!!!! Cholesterol is good on both counts.
So the med is gone, and now I'm riding, walking and lifting again. No heavy weight, just something to keep me moving. Walked 10 miles last week, rode 9 miles on Sunday for my first ride in two years. My butt wasn't thrilled with me, but today I walked 3 miles. Tomorrow, I ride!!!!
