I feel incredibly lucky tonight! I commute 30 miles round trip on my Trek 4500 mountain bike at least 3 -4 times/wk. I've put over 2400 miles on my bike since June. Tonight I loaded up my panniers on my rear rack and started my journey home. Not .10 of a mile from my bike locker, I heard a horrible grinding sound and my chain slipped and came off. I thought at first that my pannier had slipped so that it was interfering with the rear derailler. I repositioned my pannier and tried to go again. Again...terrible grinding and my chain wouldn't turn. Upon closer inspection, I noted that my rack had lost its rear pin and had jammed into the rear sprocket. I feel very lucky that that didn't happen while I was flying down the hill at 30 miles/hr! I'm glad that worst that happened is that my bike went back in the locker and I was able to get a ride home fairly easily. No commute tomorrow  Instead, it'll be Spin class and then to the lbs! :)
