Can anyone recommend a good guide book for camping around the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I'm not looking for anything remotely bicycle touring specific, just some good information about what's available and what's open, especially in the winter.
My wife and I's new bikes will be here in about three weeks and this is going to be our first tour. It'll probably be just a couple of days, maybe a week, riding the Outer Banks, shaking out the bikes and our touring setup.
Thanks for the advice.

Check out Map # 4 from the Adventure Cycling east coast route - it has an outer banks option and the map lists most if not all of the campgrounds and other information that you'll want. The national park service web site should have alot of good information, too.
I've ridden the outer banks twice, one time in winter and once in summer and enjoyed it both times, but found the southern less developed areas are definitely much nicer for riding.
Depending on your route, there will be 2 or 3 long bridges to cross that seem intimidating when you think about them, but really weren't a problem.

The state campgrounds will all be closed in winter, as will *most* of the private tourist ones. However, if you can get by without needing the facilities, you won't have any problem staying at the closed state campgrounds... nobody checked up at all when I used them during the closed season.

I found some private campgrounds that were open when I was there in december (2 years ago), but I wish I had done what brokenrobot did - the public campgrounds are much nicer and closer to the beach.
