so I missed last week, making up for it with this nifty Bicycling piece on Merckx and his, at that time, new frame and bike operation. Not sure of the exact issue date - but likely some time in Mid-late 80's.
enjoy

I'm sure that his operation wasn't that new then. A childhood friend of mine had a Mercx in about '82, and I'd been seeing them around for a couple of years before that.

good Q
...so I went to the EddyM cycles site (http://www.eddymerckx.be/) to find out. Not much company history, but the opening flash sequence says "25 years". That would make startup in 1980?
sounds about right...

Don't forget that Eddy had been licensing out his name, prior to starting his own factory. Eddy Merckx's name has appeared on some entry models made by Falcon. The article is referring only to Eddy's own operation and not the other companies that were licensed to produce bicycles with his name on them.

I couldn't tell you for sure whether my friends bike was made at his factory, or by Falcon, but if his own site says that it started in 80, and that's when I remember seeing them too.......

Well, make your own mind up, but I don't think it was new in 1990.
