Has anyone here imported a recumbent into Canada? I am thinking of ordering from the U.S. I expect that I would pay GST and provincial sales tax, but, what import duties are applied. Assuming the frame is made in Tiawan, duty on a "bicycle" is supposed to be 13%. If the frame is U.S. made, I think there is no duty. However, trying to find out on the government websites is a bit confusing since anti-dumping charges have been applied in the past on bikes from various countries, China in particular.

Are you ordering an ActionBent? I know for sure that you'll pay the 13% duty. As for other manufacturers, I don't know. You could probably email the customer service people of whatever company you're looking at.
If you can, see if you can challenge any duties on bikes that were applied to protect Canadian upright companies. Unless there are recumbent companies they are trying to protect, maybe you could get a ruling by customs not to pay it.
Thanks jeff-o, Actionbent is one of the companies I am looking at. I know you are very interested in their trike, have you worked out a cost to your door in Canadian $ ?

I spoke to someone in Canada who bought an AB trike through eBay, they said they paid $1655 plus $111 for duty. The $1655 is in Canadian dollars, but they didn't specify if that number included the shipping charges or GST. I have a feeling that one or the other was not included in that price...
Dave, You might get in touch with Brenda at MBS Tandems in Mississaugua. They are bringing bikes into Canada all the time, mostly tandems, but singles as well. She can give you the scoop on what's required and may offer to "broker" for you. Sorry, I've misplaced their contact info.

Thanks all for your responses :) I will follow up on the MBS lead. I was thinking more of a 2 wheel 'bent, but, the trikes have always interested me.
