Hello All,

I was just wondering your thoughts on what is the best time of the year to get a good deal on a new mountain bike. I have heard people say that winter is the best time to buy a motorcycle, and was wondering if this applies to bicycles as well.

Also, I am looking to get a new bike since my old Fuji kicked the bucket. My budget is around 300 for a new bike. Can anyone give me some good ideas on what kind of bike to get? I would greatly appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

Thanks a lot,

Mike

Unfortunately $300.00 doesn't buy much anymore. If it's a mountain bike there are probably some out there. If it's a road bike, save your money or buy used.

I agree with previous poster. With $300, the only decent bikes you will get are hybrids (and there are a few good ones in the lot).... and second hand bikes.

Here, you might get a deal (nothing fantastic, by the way), if there are changes between bike years, like going from 8-speed to 9-speed.

When I shopped for a bike 2 years ago, I found, however, that:

- Many stores close for Winter. Since I cycle year round, I don't feel comfortable shopping in a place that stops talking bikes in late August.
- I enjoyed a more relaxed environment, because very few people were in the stores.
- I had better service because of that, (and maybe because I was served by a senior knowledgeable employee).
- It was fairly easy to negociate bike improvements. They replaced the road drivetrain with a compact chainset for a minimal cost.

Regards,
