Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. This was very much unlike anything I've seen recently, so I thought I'd share. Anybody use one of these?

I think that was standard gear in the 50's. :) Where did you find the picture?

Don't they have a nickname for those? Basically, they hold the pieces together when your head hits the ground hard.

I don't know anything about the helmet, but the guy wearing it looks familiar. :D

It was called a "hairnet" made of leather,, stuffed with horse hair. It offered little more then a little padding when put to use.

I was still racing in one until 1985 and they were pretty much standard fare. :) I've got mine packed away in the attic along with some wool jersies, shorts, and Vittoria shoes with nailed on cleats.

My husband has one from his track riding days in the early to mid 70's. I guess it was better than nothing, but not by much.

It obviously didn't help that guy. His head is completely disconnected from the rest of his body. Yuck.

No! That's what the sumo wrestlers wear, isn't it?
I know I'm right and that probably doesn't protect their block head. Guess it doesn't help the cyclists either.
