Which is the better bike: the Bianchi Veloce or the new Specialized Allez Comp? I ask because I am relatively new to the sport and somewhat unsure of the technical pros and cons of each. Also, is the difference in frame material (steel v. aluminum) a significant factor on which to base my decision? Any unbiased advice/suggestions would be both informative and appreciated.

The difference between steel and aluminum is usually easily noticeable. Aluminum gives a stiff ride that feels fast (and is) but over time becomes more uncomforatable than steel. Aluminum doesn't rust and is lighter. If I were choosing between the two, I would choose steel because of the ride. You need to test ride some different bikes and check out the differences for yourself.
It will come down to aluminum vs. steel as the last poster said.
I personally would choose steel. Modern steel tube sets weigh only slightly more than their aluminum counterparts in most cases, and the ride quality and durability of steel is superior.
The Veloce has a very nice (and quite light) double butted CrMo steel frame.
It is also arguable that Campy Veloce performs better than Ultegra (although it will be heavier than ultegra).
If I were in your position Id take the Bianchi.
But they are both very nice bikes. Shimano and Aluminum or Campy and Steel? two very different machines in a way.

Thanks for the advice! Keep the replies coming.
something else to consider ... talk to both dealers (assuming they are different entities). it is true that aluminum and steel offer different riding experiences, but i would trade that factor for a dealer willing to go the extra mile. also check out parts inventories. it is my sense that campagnolo, although arguably slightly better quality, is both more expensive and harder to come by than shimano.
another thing to consider: i believe the frame spacing in the bianchi is a bit more generous than the specialized. that means the specialized is likely to be slightly stiffer for racing, but that the bianchi is more versatile in that it will accommodate larger tires (should you decide you want to compromise a bit of performance for a more comfortable ride) and maybe even racks and fenders, should you want to go that route. personally, i really value versatility. it's in important consideration unless you plan to race, in which case you should be less compromising and perhaps opt for the specialized.
Veloce better than Ultegra?Ha! Give me a break. People who have actually used then often give the nod to 105 over Veloce.

I had Ultegra on my previous bike.
105 is garbage compared to Veloce. Performance wise, I find Veloce to be superior. Weightwise, no.
The reviewers at CampyOnly seemed to feel Veloce shifted better than Record for the most part, they have an excellent review there.
Veloce shifts better than Record?? Gimme a break! So then why does Campy even bother with Chorus and Record, just for the freds and poseurs?HaHaHa.
Give strong consideration to the fit of the bike.
Get as many miles as the dealers will let you on each frame before choosing.
Comfort will rein over quicker shifts in the long run.
Oh ya, and don't forget to choose the cooler color. ;)
greg...you da man. No wacky weed talk here.

Nice knee-jerk reaction (again)
Once again: CAMPYONLY.COM made this assertion....if you want to find out why go read the article/review.
