Road Cycling - My new bike - '03 Trek 2300

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I spent way too long looking for a new road bike but thanks to the patience of a couple of LBS and thanks to suggestions and ideas from members here on Bike Forums, I've finally got my bike.
I was tempted to go with steel but finally decided on aluminum alloy. I was also tempted to go down the carbon fiber and titanium route but they were a bit too pricey for me. I also decided on full Ultegra components.
Some would say this is overkill (they are probably right), but I like it and am planning to ride it for a long time! Ten years have passed since I last rode on a decent road bike and I'm amazed with how great it feels.
Also, I have to say that I had a great experience buying the bike and appeciated the fact that I have a LBS that knows a lot about road bikes and made sure I was sized right, etc.
If I did it right, here's the pic:

Very nice scoot! Yup, the initial expense always seems like a HUGE chunk of change. However, when amortized over a 10-year period or so, and taking into account all the joy this item will bring to your life, it almost seems like a bargain! :)

Nice bike!!
What kind of pedals are those - Speedplay, SPD, or Ritchie? Hard to tell from the picture.
Now all you need is a BF jersey and a good cyclocomputer. :D

Ron,
Yes, those are speedplay pedals. The LBS came off the price enough that I could apply the savings against speedplay pedals and even had a little left over for shoes. It hasn't taken as long to get used to riding with them as I thought. I definately like the horizontal freedom they give.
Also, you are right, I'm thinking now about a bike computer and also a flashing taillight since I tend to ride early in the morning before sunrise.
Any ideas?
Jim
very , Very, Very SWEET! congrats and ride it in good health!
Anyone who could begrudge you the money spent on a good ride simply does not know the happiness that can be found riding a bike.
I use the specialized lights - the comp and pro. the doulbe one goes on teh back of my seat pack, the single one goes on teh back of my helmet, and I round it all out with a nite rider digital extreme double light on the handle bars. All go into flasing mode in the early AM hours. I use the NR as my main source of light when it gets dark.

I have a Vetta RT77 (http://www.vetta.com/Product_RT77.html) on both bikes. Has cadence and lots of other information. Like them a lot. Had a Cateye Astrale but it gave me lots of problems.
If you want a wireless computer try the Vetta RT88 (http://www.vetta.com/Product_RT88.html). Almost the same as the RT77 but doesn't have cadence. :(
My taillights are Vistalite Super Nebula 5 (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/large_photo.html?SKU=5577&Store=Bike).
Could get through to Vista's website.

If you need a headlight for more than a short ride, I'd recommend a Niterider TrailRat (10W) or NiteOwl (10W). I have two NiteOwls. The rechargeable batteries last about 2.5 hours.
If you don't need a lot of light or that much time get any decent light by Vista, Cateye, or whatever your LBS has in stock.

Now now, Treks don't seem to bad do they? ;) I plan on getting the 5200 in the near future. Gotta love those bikes.:D
Very nice bike! I like the matching color wheels. I got my flashing tail light (up to 5 settings of flashing sequence) for $1.99 in a $0.99 store. The down side of it, is that it uses 2 AA batteries (extra weight to some of the racers out there) and it does not come with a attaching piece for the bike. The light come with a belt clip....I had to get inventive and made myself a secure attaching piece for the light.
For the computer, I just purchased a simple Specialized computer (no cadence) for $25
