I've been looking at butterfly bars to add hand positions... have any of you used them? Are they good bars? Am I going to regret purchasing them?

I've only seen them in catalogues, never on a bike.
Assuming you can easily change the angle, it should give you an amazing variety in hand positions.
However, you will have to explain everytime you stop, just what the heck you are steering with.

I just posted a butterfly/trekking bar problem on the mechanics site. In short I cannot use my bar end shifters with the hanblebars as the diameter of the hole is too small, so that is something to consider.

I've had a used bike for about a month with butterfly bars and like them. There are lots of hand possitions, and better for more upright riding than rams horn bars, but you can't get out of the wind as well. Also you may find that your stem height and length needs adjustment. My bars have the ends - where the shifters and brake levers are - quite a bit lower than where the bars meet the stem. This is different from mountain bike or rams horn bars. I ended up getting a stem riser (an uncutt steerer tube would have been nice - but it was a used bike). Having said all of that, it is very comfortable on the hands and I like it for what it is - a good settup for more upright riding, in my opinion.

I did 52+ miles yesterday (Sat) on the reconfigured Nishiki, and the "butterfly" bars are certainly more comfortable than the original straights. I still might need to adjust the stem length though, as the bars seem a shade close, and the saddle is as far back as it will go - but the extra riding positions make the longer rides easier on the arms and shoulders.
