Now that i've just about got my CNC mill working after 4 months and more money than i care to think about....
I need projects. The friend of mine who helped tremendously with the electronics side of this project suggested I build a robot, using the mill to produce parts.
Has anybody here ever built a robot? What was your experience with it

Built one back in the 80s as my college thesis project. If you're just looking for a project for yourself, you'll have a blast, if you are looking to make a buck, best come up with something original...which is getting harder and harder to do in robotics. Wanna really have a blast - think Battle Bots!

Sort of. Our freshmen design project was a remote controlled device for moving mousetraps (without setting them off). I think you can handle it, but I highly recommend sticking to remote control. You're getting into a world of complexity if you start thinking autonomy. It'd be a good project for honing your machining skills and learning more about machine design and electrical components.

make it look like a bad ass... and make it propane powered! it could should fire out it's ass and exhaust tubes! that'd be one bad ass robot... :D

Make it run on alcohol like Bender!

Not a "robot" precisely, but my senior design project in college I (and a partner) built a micro-controlled car. It had Infrared sensors on the bottom which could determine the color it bounced a light to and read. We used it to make the car follow a black line on the floor. It was cool....the sensor signals were conditioned and fed into the micro-controller (Motolorolla HC11) which in turn used that info to decide which wheels to turn, right, left or both.

Well, it's time I was outed.

Phantomcow, I AM a robot. That's why I'm so blazing smart. I've been operating for years without anyone ever getting wise to my ZZZZz11011010101010111010101001

Forget the robot, I want a house-elf...

no no, i cant do remote controll. Thats TOO easy.
After doing a CNC conversion, i know plenty about motion control. My friend has made probably 20 robots so im going to have to pick his brain. I ts good to know its a challenge, those entertain me :)
