Howdy,

I am heading to the bay area for Thanksgiving! Woo-hoo!
I lived out there for a brief time, so I know how nice it would be to have my own bike while I am out there. The problem is, most of the bike rental fleets out there push hybrids at $40/day! That's approaching the cost of renting a Ford Festiva! I was wondering if any bay-area residents here have a cheaper option. Here in Philadelphia, temporary visitors can sometimes borrow or cheaply rent beater bikes from Neighborhood Bike Works (our bike co-op). Is there a similar option in SF?

$40.00 a day for a bike rental? That's insane. I rented a car last week for $29.00 per day which included 200 miles. Are people actually renting bikes for $40.00 per day? If so, I think I found a new career!

Go to a local thrift shop or salvation army and pick up a bike for $15.00. Return it when you are done and write off the donation on your taxes. That way, you don't have to worry about theft, loss, or any damages to the bike.

Alright, alright, so I exaggerated a wee bit...but $30 I have seen, and like you pointed out, that's the price of renting a car (in the snowy midwest). SF is an expensive place, for real. Finding two bikes at thrift stores would probably soak up too many valuable vacation hours, but thanks for the suggestion.
