Mountain Biking - I learned a lesson...
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I learned the value of my LBS this weekend. I decided to go for a longer ride than usual on Sunday, alot of it on roads and managed to pick up a nail in my back tire. I had done the right thing and bought a patch kit and frame-mounted pump just for this occasion. However, by the time I got the patch on and the tire on, i realized through the sound of rushing air I didn't patch it right. I couldn't find the other hole and figured I could just air it up as I rode to the bike shop. But the pump broke. The first time I use the pump, it breaks. I managed to walk the 3 or 4 miles to the bike shop and told them what happened and they changed the tube for me without charging any labor(I know it isn't much, but its the principle) and changed out the pump for me so I wouldn't have to deal with the manufacturer. I just know now I'm glad i went through the bike shop instead of some catalog since I would have been stuck if I did. I just wanted to share my fun weekend.
A good LBS, such as the one you describe, should be rewarded with your business. Support the good ones, and run away from the shops with poor service.
Then, we all (riders, shop owners, manufacturers, etc) benefit!

I decided to ride to my "not so local" bike shop this weekend! I used my spare tube on the way there... so once I arrived there, I purchased two new tubes! (to be prepared) I USED THEM BOTH ON MY WAY HOME! I was just glad the shop was there for me. Also, along my journey, some (F&^ck)@g A^&ol&e peeled out from a driveway I had just riden past, speeds right by me (like 10" from my handlebar), honks at me and continues to flip me off!!!!! I had absolutely no interaction with this idiot whatsoever until this had occured. Once I arrived at the bike shop, I spent about 2 hrs talking to the owner about the Vuelta a Espania.... I really felt like I was home, that at least somewhere out there, others shared my passion and understood my outlook on life and cycling! I was truly grateful for my LBS this weekend... especially after one moronic individual was able to rattle my nerves!
I'm in the market for a new bike, and have been looking everywhere online for a deal, but I think I know where I'll be spending my money very soon!
