Today I picked up a new rear wheel to replace my tacoed one. Being cheap and all, I rummaged in my LBS' heap of old stuff, and pulled out a magnificent all-black wheel with a Shimano hub that the LBS assured me came from a police bike. A police bike I said? yes, it's totally quiet when it freewheels.
Indeed. Apparently there's a roller clutch in this hub: it has no slop when I start pedalling, and most impressively, it really is quiet. No clickety-click. Later on the bike path, I had a bit of a tailwind. At some point I matched the speed of the wind on the bike, and I stopped hearing the wind in my ears. I then quit pedalling to eliminate the chain noise, and wow! no noise, nothing, just the tires on the ground. It was so quiet, I did startle a couple of pedestrians passing them. That was a great moment. And all that for 30 euros (the price of the used wheel). I love roller clutches :)
